Abstract

Systems for videoconferencing are designed for where people are seated around a video conferencing system. The systems include a camera so the far site can see the local participants and the systems include displays that show the far site. The displays are properly aligned with the cameras so that when people at the far site view the displayed images of the near site, it looks like they have eye contact with the near site. Obtaining the alignments of the camera and the displays to provide this apparent eye contact result requires meeting a series of different constraints relating to the various sizes and angles of the components and the locations of the participants.

Claims (37)

1. A videoconferencing unit comprising:

a base structure adaptable for placement on a planar surface;

a camera device coupled to the base structure, the camera device having a first height along a first line orthogonal to the base structure; and

a first display surface having a central region, the central region having a second height along a second line parallel to the first line, the second height shorter than the first height,

wherein the camera device is configured to capture image data such that when eyes of a participant are at a point within a predetermined distance from the central region of the first display surface, and a third line orthogonal to the first display surface forms an acute angle with a fourth line from the camera device intersecting the point, the captured image data corresponding to the eyes is renderable to a second display surface so as to be perceivable as making eye contact with a viewer; and

the angle so formed is between five and twenty degrees.

2. The videoconferencing unit of claim 1 , wherein the angle is greater than or equal to 15 degrees, and less than or equal to 16 degrees.

3. The videoconferencing unit of claim 1 , wherein the angle is ten degrees.

4. The videoconferencing unit of claim 1 , wherein the first display surface is rectangular and a diagonal distance from one corner to another is greater than or equal to 23 inches and less than or equal to 27 inches.

5. The videoconferencing unit of claim 1 , wherein the base structure is configured to be located on a floor, and the point corresponding to the eyes of a participant is a vertical distance from the floor attainable in a seated position.

6. The videoconferencing unit of claim 1 , wherein the height of the camera device is 1062 millimeters, and the display surface is a 655 millimeter by 435 millimeter rectangular surface.

7. The videoconferencing unit of claim 1 , wherein the distance from the central region of the display surface is 1800 millimeters along a line parallel to a bottom of the base structure.

8. The videoconferencing unit of claim 1 , further comprising:

an electronics module coupled to the first display surface and the camera and adapted to connect to a far site videoconferencing unit, the electronics module capable of converting images from the camera into a videoconferencing format signal for transmission to the far site videoconferencing unit, and configured to convert a received videoconferencing format signal from the far site videoconferencing unit for display on the first display surface.

9. A videoconferencing unit comprising:

a base structure adaptable for placement on a planar surface;

a camera device coupled to the base structure, the camera device having a first height along a first line orthogonal to the base structure;

a first display surface having a central area, the central area having a second height along a second line parallel to the first line, the second height shorter than the first height;

a processor coupled to the camera device and the first display surface; and

a memory storing instructions executable by the processor to:

capture, using the camera device, image data corresponding to eyes of a participant from a point within a predetermined distance from the central area of the first display surface; and

render, to a second display surface, the captured image data corresponding to the eyes so as to be perceivable as making eye contact with a viewer when a third line orthogonal to the first display surface forms an angle with a fourth line from the camera device intersecting the point,

wherein the angle is between five and twenty degrees.

10. The videoconferencing unit of claim 9 , wherein the angle is greater than or equal to 15 degrees, and less than or equal to 16 degrees.

11. The videoconferencing unit of claim 9 , wherein the angle is ten degrees.

12. The videoconferencing unit of claim 9 , wherein the first display surface is rectangular and a diagonal distance from one corner to another is greater than or equal to 23 inches and less than or equal to 27 inches.

13. The videoconferencing unit of claim 9 , wherein the base structure is configured to be located on a floor, and the point corresponding to the eyes of the participant is a vertical distance from the floor attainable in a seated position.

14. The videoconferencing unit of claim 9 , wherein the height of the first camera device is 1062 millimeters, and the display surface is a 655 millimeter by 435 millimeter rectangular surface.

15. The videoconferencing unit of claim 9 , wherein the distance from the central area of the display surface is 1800 millimeters along a line parallel to a bottom of the base structure.

16. The videoconferencing unit of claim 9 , further comprising:

an electronics module coupled to the first display surface and the camera and adapted to connect to a far site videoconferencing unit, the electronics module capable of converting images from the camera into a videoconferencing format signal for transmission to the far site videoconferencing unit, and configured to convert a received videoconferencing format signal from the far site videoconferencing unit for display on the first display surface.

17. A method of simulating eye contact within a teleconferencing system, the method comprising:

providing a base structure adaptable for placement on a planar surface;

providing a camera device coupled to the base structure, the camera device having a first height along a first line orthogonal to the base structure;

providing a first display surface having a central portion, the central portion having a second height along a second line parallel to the first line, the second height shorter than the first height;

capturing, using the camera device, image data corresponding to eyes of a participant from a point within a predetermined distance from the central portion of the first display surface; and

rendering, to a second display surface, the captured image data corresponding to the eyes so as to be perceivable as making eye contact with a viewer when a third line orthogonal to the display surface forms an angle with a fourth line from the camera device intersecting the point, the angle being greater than or equal to 15 degrees, and less than or equal to 16 degrees.
