Abstract

Composite cards formed in accordance with the invention include a security layer comprising a hologram or diffraction grating formed at or in the center, or core layer of the card. The hologram may be formed by embossing a designated area of the core layer with a diffraction pattern and depositing a thin layer of metal on the embossed layer. Additional layers may be selectively and symmetrically attached to the top and bottom surfaces of the core layer. A laser may be used to remove selected portions of the metal formed on the embossed layer, at selected stages of forming the card, to impart a selected pattern or information to the holographic region. The cards may be “lasered’ when the cards being processed are attached to, and part of, a large sheet of material, or after the sheets are die-cut into cards.

Claims (23)

1. A method process for forming a document having first and second sides, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a clear plastic sheet defining a core layer of said document, the core layer having a first surface and a second surface;

forming a pattern on the first surface of the core layer;

forming a patterned layer of a selected metal or metal compound on a designated area of the formed pattern operative to cause a light pattern to be produced corresponding to the formed pattern in response to incident light;

attaching a selected number of clear plastic buffer layers to the patterned layer, and attaching a like number of clear layers to the second surface of the core layer, including at least one clear layer in the selected number or the like number having information selectively written thereon, and

selectively modifying the patterned layer to customize the document, including forming a window within the designated area that renders the selectively written information on the at least one clear layer visible through the window from one side of the document or that renders the window see-through from both sides of the document.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein the selective modification of the patterned layer is performed with a laser to form the window within said designated area by selectively ablating selected portions of the vapor deposited layer.

3. The process of claim 1 , wherein the selected number of clear layers includes a first clear plastic buffer layer attached to the first surface of the core layer via a first clear adhesive primer layer; and the like number of clear layers includes a second clear plastic buffer layer attached to the second surface of the core layer via a second clear adhesive primer layer.

4. The process of claim 1 , wherein the metal or metal compound reflects incident light.

5. The process of claim 1 , wherein the metal or metal compound comprises zinc sulfide or zinc oxide.

6. The process of claim 1 , wherein the step of forming the pattern comprises providing an embossing layer on a surface of the core layer, and the pattern is a diffraction pattern formed in the embossing layer.

7. The process of claim 6 , comprising embossing the diffraction pattern in the embossing layer.

8. The process of claim 1 , comprising providing the selectively written information visible through the window in the form of alphanumeric information.

9. The process of claim 1 , wherein the document comprises a card and the method comprises performing the step of selectively modifying the patterned layer after the step of attaching the selected number of clear layers to the patterned layer and the like number of clear layers to the bottom of the core layer.

10. The process of claim 9 , comprising adding an integrated circuit chip to the card.

11. The process of claim 10 , wherein the integrated circuit chip is operative to provide radio frequency identification (RFID) functionality.

12. The process of claim 10 , further comprising providing an external contact along one surface of the card.

13. The process of claim 12 , further comprising configuring the card as a dual interface card configured to enable information on the card to be read or written via RFID and contact.

14. The process of claim 1 , comprising forming the window that is see-through from both sides of the document such that applying a light source in direct contact with one of the first or second side of the document permits viewing the light pattern from the other of the first or second side.

15. The process of claim 1 , comprising forming the patterned layer using a vapor deposition.

16. A card formed by the process of claim 9 .

17. The document of claim 16 , wherein the card has an external contact along one surface of the card.

18. The document of claim 17 , wherein the card is a dual interface card.
