Abstract

A system and method for charging battery packs is provided. The system may include a charging pad comprising a power supply, a charging pad surface, and a microcontroller unit. The power supply may provide charging power. The charging pad surface may include a first charging region and a second charging region. The microcontroller unit may control delivery of charging power to the first charging region and the second charging region such that a device placed on the first charging region is given a higher charging priority than a device placed on the second charging region.

Claims (62)

1. A charging pad, comprising:

a power supply configured to provide charging power;

a charging pad surface comprising a first conductive charging region configured to directly contact a first plurality of contact points of a first device when placed on the first conductive charging region and a second conductive charging region configured to directly contact a second plurality of contact points of a second device when placed on the second conductive charging region; and

a microcontroller unit configured to control delivery of charging power to the first conductive charging region and the second conductive charging region such that the first device when placed on the first conductive charging region is given a higher charging priority than the second device when placed on the second conductive charging region.

2. The charging pad of claim 1 , further comprising:

a manually operated control that permits a user to select between a boost mode of operation and a normal mode of operation;

wherein the microcontroller unit is configured to give the first device when placed on the first conductive charging region the higher charging priority in response to the boost mode of operation being selected via the manually operated control.

3. The charging pad of claim 1 , further comprising:

a manually operated control that permits a user to select between a boost mode of operation and a normal mode of operation;

wherein the microcontroller unit is configured to direct more charging power to the first conductive charging region in response to the boost mode of operation being selected via the manually operated control.

4. The charging pad of claim 1 , further comprising:

a manually operated control that permits a user to select between a boost mode of operation and a normal mode of operation;

wherein the microcontroller unit is configured to direct more charging power to the first conductive charging region and less charging power to the second conductive charging region in response to the boost mode of operation being selected via the manually operated control.

5. The charging pad of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller unit is configured to direct a predetermined, permanent amount of more charging power to the first conductive charging region than to the second conductive charging region.

6. The charging pad of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller unit is further configured to:

monitor a voltage level of the first device when placed on the first conductive charging region;

monitor a voltage level of the second device when placed on the second conductive charging region; and

direct charging power to the first conductive charging region and the second conductive charging region based on voltage levels of the first device when placed on the first conductive charging region and the second device when placed on the second conductive charging region.

7. The charging pad of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller unit is further configured to:

monitor a charge level of the first device when placed on the first conductive charging region;

monitor a charge level of the second device when placed on the second conductive charging region; and

assign a higher charging priority to the first conductive charging region in response to determining the charge level of the first device is lower than the charge level of the second device.

8. The charging pad of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller unit is further configured to:

monitor a charge level of the first device when placed on the first conductive charging region and a charge level of the second device when placed on the second conductive charging region;

determine, based on the monitored charge levels, whether a single region of the first conductive charging region and the second conductive charging region is charging a device; and

assign a higher charging priority to the single region that is charging a device.

9. The charging pad of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller unit is further configured to:

monitor a charge level of the first device when placed on the first conductive charging region and a charge level of the second device when placed on the second conductive charging region;

determine, based on the monitored charge levels, whether a single region of the first conductive charging region and the second conductive charging region is charging a device; and

direct all charging power to the single region that is charging a device.

10. The charging pad of claim 1 , wherein:

the first conductive charging region is configured to conductively charge the first device when placed on the first conductive charging region via the first plurality of contact points of the first device in direct contact with the first conductive charging region; and

the second conductive charging region is configured to conductively charge the second device when placed on the second conductive charging region via the second plurality of contact points of the second device in direct contact with the second conductive charging region.

11. The charging pad of claim 1 , wherein:

the first conductive charging region comprises a first plurality of electrodes configured to engage the first plurality of contact points of the first device when placed on the first conductive charging region and conductively charge the first device via the first plurality of contact points engaged with the first plurality of electrodes; and

the second conductive charging region comprises a second plurality of electrodes configured to engage the second plurality of contact points of second device when placed on the second conductive charging region and conductively charge the second device via the second plurality of contact points engaged with the second plurality of electrodes.

A method of operating a charging pad having a charging pad surface with a first conductive charging region configured to conductively charge one or more first devices placed on the first conductive charging region and a second conductive charging region configured to conductively charge one or more second devices placed on the second conductive charging region, the method comprising:

assigning a charging priority to the first conductive charging region of the charging pad surface; and

delivering more charging power to the first conductive charging region than to the second conductive charging region in response to the first conductive charging region having a higher charging priority than the second conductive charging region.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

determining whether a boost mode of operation has been selected;

wherein said delivering comprises delivering the more charging power to the first conductive charging region in response to the boost mode of operation being selected.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein said delivering comprises delivering the more charging power to the first conductive charging region in response to determining that a manually operated control of the charging pad selects a boost mode of operation.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein said delivering comprises delivering the more charging power to the first conductive charging region and delivering less charging power to second conductive charging region in response to determining that a manually operated control of the charging pad selects a boost mode of operation.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein said delivering comprises delivering a predetermined, permanent amount of more charging power to the first conductive charging region than to second conductive charging region.

17. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

monitoring a voltage level of a first device of the one or more first devices placed on the first conductive charging region; and

monitoring a voltage level of a second device of the one or more second devices placed on the second charging region; and

wherein said delivering comprises delivering charging power to the first conductive charging region and the second conductive charging region based on voltage levels of the first device on the first conductive charging region and the second device on the second conductive charging region.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

monitoring a charge level of a first device of the one or more first devices placed on the first conductive charging region;

monitoring a charge level of a second device of the one or more second devices placed on the second conductive charging region; and

assigning a higher charging priority to the first conductive charging region in response to determining that the charge level of the first device is lower than the charge level of the second device.

19. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

monitoring a charge level of a first device of the one or more first devices placed on the first conductive charging region and a charge level of a second device of the one or more second devices placed on the second conductive charging region; and

assigning a higher charging priority to the first conductive charging region than to the second conductive charging region in response to determining, based on the monitored charge levels, that the first conductive charging region is charging the first device and that the second conductive charging region is not charging the second device.

20. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

monitoring a charge level of first device of the one or more first devices placed on the first conductive charging region and a charge level of a second device of the one or more second devices placed on the second conductive charging region;

wherein said delivering comprises directing all charging power to the first conductive charging region in response to determining, based on the monitored charge levels, that the first conductive charging region is charging the first device and the second conductive charging region is not charging the second device.

21. The charging pad of claim 1 , wherein:

the first conductive charging region comprises a plurality of metal strips that span the first conductive charging region; and

the plurality of metal strips are configured to directly contact the first plurality of contact points of the first device when placed on the first conductive charging region and conductively charge the first device via the first plurality of contact points in contact with the plurality of metal strips.
