Abstract

A metering system that may find use to generate values for measured parameters of materials. The metering system may be configured with a metrology device configured to generate a first signal in digital format to convey information about material in a conduit. The metering system may also include an accessory coupled with the metrology device, the accessory configured to use the information of the first signal to generate a second signal, the second signal conveying information that defines a measured parameter for the material. In one implementation, the accessory comprises executable instructions that configure the accessory to exchange information with the metrology device so as to verify a regulatory status for the metrology device.

Claims (42)

1 . A metering system, comprising:

a metrology device configured to generate a first signal in digital format that relates to an analog signal that conveys information about material in a conduit; and

an accessory coupled with the metrology device, the accessory configured to use the information of the first signal to generate a second signal, the second signal conveying information that defines a measured parameter for the material,

wherein the accessory comprises executable instructions that configure the accessory to exchange information with the metrology device so as to verify a regulatory status for the metrology device.

2 . The metering system of claim 1 , wherein the metrology device comprises storage memory and validation data that is stored on the storage memory at the time of manufacture, and wherein the validation data relates to the regulatory status.

3 . The metering system of claim 1 , wherein the executable instructions configure the accessory to access a registry with a listing of stored data that defines the regulatory status for a plurality of metrology devices.

4 . The metering system of claim 1 , wherein the executable instructions configure the accessory to set a fault condition that relates to the regulatory status of the metrology device.

5 . The metering system of claim 1 , wherein the executable instructions configure the accessory to use the information to confirm a calibration date for the metrology device.

6 . The metering system of claim 1 , herein the executable instructions configure the accessory to use the information to confirm calibration data is not corrupted.

7 . The metering system of claim 1 , wherein the executable instructions configure the accessory to populate an event to an event log in response to the regulatory status of the metrology device.

8 . The metering system of claim 1 , wherein the metrology device comprises a gas meter, wherein the data defines a value for volume of the material, and wherein the executable instructions configure the accessory to calculate a value for the measured parameter using data that originates at the metrology device and is transmitted via the first signal.

9 . The metering system of claim 8 , wherein the metrology device comprises a first measuring device and a second measuring device, each having a sensor responsive to a first fluid condition and a second fluid condition in the gas meter, respectively, and wherein the executable instructions configure the accessory to calculate the value for a measured parameter using data that originates at the first measuring device and the second measuring device.

10 . An apparatus, comprising:

a circuit board with a processor, storage memory, and executable instructions stored on the storage memory, wherein the executable instructions configure the processor for,

receiving validation data from a metrology device in a first signal in digital format, the validation data stored during manufacture of the metrology device; and

using the validation data to verify a regulatory status for the metrology device,

wherein the regulatory status indicates compliance with legal metrology standards that is assigned to the metrology device separate and independent of the circuit board.

11 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the executable instructions configure the processor for,

accessing a registry with a listing of stored data that defines the regulatory status for a plurality of the metrology devices,

comparing the validation data to the stored data in the listing, and

selecting an entry from the listing with stored data that matches the validation data.

12 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the executable instructions configure the processor for

populating an event to an event log that describes dated records of actions that occur on the printed circuit board.

13 . The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the executable instructions configure the processor for,

setting a fault condition that relates to the regulatory status of the metrology device, wherein the event corresponds with the fault condition.

14 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the executable instructions configure the processor for,

detecting a change in state at a connection on the printed circuit board used to exchange data with the metrology device, wherein the fault condition indicates that connection is open.

15 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the executable instructions configure the processor for,

initiating a handshake with the metrology device in response to the change in state at the connector, the handshake causing the metrology device to transmit the validation data.

16 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the executable instructions configure the processor for,

calculating a value for a measured parameter using data that originates at the metrology device and is transmitted via the first signal.

17 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the executable instructions configure the processor for,

wherein the value accounts for ambient conditions proximate said apparatus using data that originates at the metrology device and is transmitted via the first signal.

18 . A method, comprising:

initiating a commissioning process on a metering system;

unplugging a first measuring device from the metering system; and

plugging a second measuring device to the metering system,

wherein the commissioning process uses validation data on the second measuring device to verify a regulatory status for the second measuring device, and

wherein the regulatory status indicates compliance with legal metrology standards that is assigned to the second metrology device separate and independent of the circuit board and the first measuring device.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the commission process starts in response to a change of state at a connector that receives one or more of the first measuring device and the second measuring device.

20 . The method of claim 18 , further comprising

receiving an input from an end user, wherein the commissioning process requires the input to operate the metering system with the second measuring device.
