Abstract

Disinfecting devices and related methods are provided that apply germicidal ultraviolet light to disinfect dispensing components of food and beverage dispensers. A disinfecting holster for a bar gun includes a support surface configured to interface with a bar gun to support the bar gun when stowed in the holster, a housing coupled with the support surface and surrounding a dispensing nozzle of the bar gun when the bar gun is stowed in the holster, and an ultraviolet light source configured to emit germicidal ultraviolet light onto the nozzle. The housing substantially contains the ultraviolet light within the housing during the application of the ultraviolet light to the dispensing nozzle. The ultraviolet light can be periodically applied to maintain the nozzle in a disinfected state.

Claims (22)

1. A method for disinfecting a food dispenser, the method comprising:

surrounding a dispensing port of a food dispenser with an enclosure, the surrounding further comprising:

moving the enclosure from a first position, in which the dispensing port is not surrounded by any part of the enclosure, to a second position, in which the enclosure fully surrounds the dispensing port; and

emitting germicidal ultraviolet light onto the dispensing port,

wherein the enclosure substantially contains the ultraviolet light within the enclosure and the ultraviolet light is emitted with a duration and an intensity selected to disinfect the dispensing port.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of emitting germicidal ultraviolet light comprises controlling an activation of an ultraviolet light source via a controller configured to periodically activate the ultraviolet light source to maintain the dispensing port in a disinfected state.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dispensing port comprises a fluid dispensing nozzle.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of emitting germicidal ultraviolet light onto the dispensing port comprises emitting the germicidal ultraviolet light from a plurality of ultraviolet light sources distributed around the enclosure.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of ultraviolet light sources are mounted within the enclosure.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of light sources are mounted in a location exterior to the enclosure, and the germicidal ultraviolet light is emitted onto the dispensing port through an aperture of the enclosure or a fiber optic cable.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of emitting germicidal ultraviolet light onto the dispensing port comprises reflecting light from an inner reflective surface of the enclosure to distribute the germicidal ultraviolet light within the enclosure.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the inner reflective internal surface is provided at bottom of the enclosure such that the germicidal ultraviolet light is emitted into an orifice of the dispensing port.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising distributing ozone generated by the germicidal ultraviolet light within the enclosure.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of emitting germicidal ultraviolet light onto the dispensing port comprises manually initiating the emission of the germicidal ultraviolet light.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, after completion of emitting the germicidal ultraviolet light onto the dispensing port:

moving the enclosure from a first position, in which the enclosure fully surrounds the dispensing port to a second position, in which the dispensing port is not surrounded by any part of the enclosure.

12. A method for disinfecting a food dispenser, the method comprising:

surrounding a dispensing port of a food dispenser with an enclosure, the surrounding including:

moving the enclosure from a first position, in which the dispensing port is not surrounded by any part of the enclosure to a second position, in which the enclosure fully surrounds the dispensing port;

emitting germicidal ultraviolet light onto the dispensing port,

wherein the enclosure substantially contains the germicidal ultraviolet light within the enclosure and the germicidal ultraviolet light is emitted with a duration and an intensity selected to disinfect the dispensing port; and

upon completion of emitting the germicidal ultraviolet light onto the dispensing port, moving the enclosure from the second position, in which the enclosure fully surrounds the dispensing port to the first position, in which the dispensing port is not surrounded by any part of the enclosure.
