Abstract

A perforation blocking sleeve is provided for use in well restimulation, the perforation blocking sleeve having a first anchoring device and one or more expandable members secured to an outer surface of the perforation blocking sleeve. The first anchoring device may be used to secure the perforation blocking sleeve over a perforation cluster within a perforated well casing. The perforation blocking sleeve defines a flow channel and may be remotely and individually uncoupled from a running tool. The perforation blocking sleeve flow channel is sized such that the running tool and a running tool driver are retractable through the flow channel of the perforation blocking sleeve. In one or more embodiments, the perforation blocking sleeve contains an organic polymeric material which expands on contact with a production fluid or an exogenous fluid introduced into the well.

Claims (44)

1. A system for use in well restimulation comprising:

a running tool;

a running tool driver;

a perforation blocking sleeve releasably coupled to the running tool, the perforation blocking sleeve comprising a flow channel extending therethrough, wherein the running tool and running tool driver both extend through the flow channel to position both the running tool driver and at least a portion of the running tool in a downhole position relative to the perforation blocking sleeve during installation of the perforation blocking sleeve and are retrievable through the flow channel following deployment of the perforation blocking sleeve;

a first anchoring device secured to the perforation blocking sleeve, the first anchoring device securing the perforation blocking sleeve within the well; and

one or more expandable members secured to an outer surface of the perforation blocking sleeve, the expandable members, upon activation, blocking flow in an annulus surrounding the perforation blocking sleeve to direct the flow into the flow channel.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a detention arm assembly, wherein the first anchoring device is integral to a tapered end of the perforation blocking sleeve and comprises a plurality of cantilevered springs defining an end portion, the end portion adapted to engage the detention arm assembly.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the cantilevered springs define one or more slips on the outer surface of the perforation blocking sleeve.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the detention arm assembly is a component of the running tool.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the expandable member is comprised of a material comprising an organic polymer susceptible to expansion by contact with either or both of an exogenous fluid and a production fluid within the perforated well casing.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the production fluid is water and the expandable member comprises an absorbent material, wherein the absorbent material expands upon exposure to water.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the perforation blocking sleeve may be reversibly coupled to the running tool via one or more detention arms.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the running tool driver is a tractor coupled to the running tool.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the running tool driver is a jointless pipe coupled to the running tool.

10. The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more sensors configured to detect a perforation cluster.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein at least one sensor is selected from the group consisting of casing collar locators, fiber optic sensors, camera sensors and acoustic sensors.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the expandable member comprises a shape-memory organic polymer which expands when its glass transition temperature is exceeded.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the expandable member further comprises one or more attachment devices for further inhibiting movement of the perforation blocking sleeve once detached from the running tool.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein said attachment devices are selected from the group consisting of buttons and slips.

15. A system for use in well restimulation comprising:

a running tool;

a running tool driver;

a perforation blocking sleeve;

a detention arm assembly;

a pair of first anchoring devices integral to opposite, tapered ends of the perforation blocking sleeve and comprising a plurality of cantilevered springs defining an end portion for engaging with the detention arm assembly; and

one or more expandable collars secured to an outer surface of the perforation blocking sleeve, the expandable collars comprising an organic polymer susceptible to expansion by contact with either or both of an exogenous fluid and a production fluid within the perforated well casing; and

wherein the pair of first anchoring devices is configured to secure the perforation blocking sleeve over a perforation cluster within a perforated well casing, the perforation blocking sleeve defining a flow channel;

wherein the perforation blocking sleeve may be remotely uncoupled from a running tool; and

wherein the running tool and the running tool driver are retractable through the flow channel of the perforation blocking sleeve.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the expandable collar further comprises a shape-memory organic polymer which expands when its glass transition temperature is exceeded.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the cantilevered springs define one or more slips on the outer surface of the perforation blocking sleeve.

18. The system of claim 15 , further comprising one or more sensors configured to detect a perforation cluster.

19. A system for use in well restimulation comprising:

a running tool;

a running tool driver;

a perforation blocking sleeve;

a detention arm assembly;

a pair of first anchoring devices integral to opposite, tapered ends of the perforation blocking sleeve and comprising a plurality of cantilevered springs defining an end portion for engaging with the detention arm assembly;

one or more expandable members secured to an outer surface of the perforation blocking sleeve; and

one or more sensors configured to detect a perforation cluster;

wherein the first anchoring devices is configured to secure the perforation blocking sleeve over a perforation cluster within the perforated well casing, the perforation blocking sleeve defining a flow channel;

wherein the perforation blocking sleeve may be remotely uncoupled from a running tool; and

wherein the running tool and the running tool driver are retractable through the flow channel of the perforation blocking sleeve.
