Abstract

In an embodiment, a method for effecting thermal therapy using an in vivo probe includes positioning the probe in a volume in a patient, identifying an irregularly shaped three-dimensional region of interest and automatically applying thermal therapy to the region using the probe. Applying thermal therapy may include identifying a first emission level at a first rotational angle based in part on a depth of a radial portion of the region in the direction of probe emission, activating emission of the probe, causing rotation of the probe to a next rotational angle, identifying a next emission level at the next rotational angle based in part on a depth of a radial portion of the region in the direction of probe emission, activating emission to deliver therapeutic energy, and repeating rotation and emission until therapeutic energy has been delivered to the volume.

Claims (9)

1. A method for effecting thermal therapy using an in vivo probe, comprising:

positioning the probe in a volume in a patient, the probe having a tip;

identifying a three-dimensional region of interest at which to apply thermal therapy, wherein the three-dimensional region of interest is irregularly shaped and wherein said identifying includes calculating a plurality of target positions as a sequence of positions and alignments of the probe based on a symmetric and asymmetric output pattern of the probe; and

applying, by processing circuitry, thermal therapy to the volume using the probe, wherein applying thermal therapy comprises a) identifying a first emission level corresponding to thermal therapy of the three-dimensional region of interest at a first rotational angle of the probe, wherein the first emission level is based at least in part upon a depth of a radial portion of the region of interest in the direction of probe emission at the first rotational angle, b) activating emission of the probe to deliver therapeutic energy at the first emission level to the three-dimensional region of interest at the first rotational angle, c) causing rotation of the probe to a next rotational angle, d) identifying a next emission level corresponding to thermal therapy of the three-dimensional region of interest at the next rotational angle of the probe, wherein the next emission level is based at least in part upon a depth of a radial portion of the region of interest in the direction of probe emission at the next rotational angle, e) activating emission of the probe to deliver therapeutic energy at the next emission level to the three-dimensional region of interest at the next rotational angle, and f) repeating steps (c) through (e) until therapeutic energy has been delivered to at least a first volume of the three-dimensional region of interest;

cooling the tip of the probe by delivering a cooling fluid to the tip of the probe to control a temperature of the probe among first and subsequent emission levels; and

monitoring a temperature of at least one of said plurality of target positions while delivering therapeutic energy at a first target position corresponding to the first rotational angle of the probe, wherein the target position is within the three-dimensional region of interest; and prior to adjusting the probe to the next target position corresponding to the next rotational angle, determining the temperature of a point in the first target position to conclude delivery of therapeutic energy at the first target position prior to moving the probe to the next target position.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the probe is selected from a side-firing laser probe.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the output pattern of the probe is a pulsed output pattern.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the probe is a side-firing laser probe and the cooling is effected by Joule-Thompson cooling.
