Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a management of multicast traffic within a wireless mesh network. In some embodiments, a wireless mesh network includes a plurality of mesh nodes and a central server in communication with at least one of the mesh nodes of the plurality of mesh nodes. In some embodiments, the central server is configured to generate one or more rules for at least one of the mesh nodes to enable a change in a pre-routing parameter in a packet header. In some embodiments, the central server includes a rules-based engine configured to generate and convey one or more traffic shaping rules in response to sensing traffic conditions.

Claims (35)

1. A wireless mesh network, comprising:

a central server in communication with a plurality of mesh nodes, the central server configured to:

recognize at least one media producer and at least one media consumer in the wireless mesh network; and

generate one or more rules based at least in part on recognizing the at least one media consumer, wherein the one or more rules comprise a first value for a pre-routing parameter of a multicast packet associated with the at least one media producer and a second value for the pre-routing parameter of the multicast packet associated with the at least one media consumer, the first value being lower than the second value, wherein the pre-routing parameter comprises a time-to-live (TTL) parameter that is adjusted at each hop within a routing path of the wireless mesh network according to the first value and the second value; and

a first mesh node within the plurality of mesh nodes configured to:

receive the one or more rules from the central server;

determine a change in the pre-routing parameter of the multicast packet based at least in part on receiving the one or more rules; and

implement the determined change in the pre-routing parameter of the multicast packet received by the first mesh node during a multicast operation.

2. The wireless mesh network of claim 1 , wherein the change in the pre-routing parameter of the multicast packet includes a change in the pre-routing parameter in a packet header of the multicast packet received by the first mesh node in the routing path.

3. The wireless mesh network of claim 2 , wherein the change in the pre-routing parameter in the packet header of the multicast packet received by the first mesh node is based at least in part on the one or more rules received by the first mesh node.

4. The wireless mesh network of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second mesh node within the plurality of mesh nodes, the second mesh node configured to:

receive the one or more rules from the central server;

change a pre-routing parameter in a packet header of a multicast packet received by the second mesh node of the plurality mesh nodes in the routing path.

5. The wireless mesh network of claim 4 , wherein the change in the pre-routing parameter in the packet header of the multicast packet received by the second mesh node is based at least in part on one or more rules received by the second mesh node.

6. The wireless mesh network of claim 1 , wherein the TTL parameter is adjusted at each hop within the routing path of the wireless mesh network according to the one or more rules of the first mesh node.

7. The wireless mesh network of claim 1 , wherein when the central server generates one or more rules, the central server is further configured to:

generate one or more rules for the first mesh node in the routing path; and

convey the one or more rules to the first mesh node in the routing path.

8. The wireless mesh network of claim 1 , the central server including a rules-based engine configured to generate the one or more rules.

9. The wireless mesh network of claim 1 , wherein the rules-based engine is configured to forward multicast traffic based at least in part on recognizing the media consumer.

10. The wireless mesh network of claim 1 , wherein a net filter associated with the first mesh node is configured to forward a received packet based at least in part on the one or more rules.

11. The wireless mesh network of claim 1 , wherein a net filter associated with the first mesh node is configured to drop a received packet based at least in part on the one or more rules.

12. The wireless mesh network of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more rules is a traffic shaping rule.

13. The wireless mesh network of claim 1 , wherein the central server is configured to sense traffic.

14. A wireless mesh network central controller comprising a rules-based engine, the rules-based engine configured:

recognize at least one media producer and at least one media consumer in the wireless mesh network;

generate one or more rules for each mesh node of a plurality of mesh nodes based at least in part on recognizing the at least one media consumer, the plurality of mesh nodes being associated with a routing path of a wireless mesh network, wherein the one or more rules comprise a first value for a pre-routing parameter of a multicast packet associated with the at least one media producer and a second value for the pre-routing parameter of the multicast packet associated with the at least one media consumer, the first value being lower than the second value, wherein the pre-routing parameter comprises a time-to-live (TTL) parameter that is adjusted at each hop within the routing path of the wireless mesh network according to the first value and the second value; and

convey the one or more rules to the mesh nodes associated with the routing path, wherein at each hop, the one or more rules enable a change in the pre-routing parameter associated with the routing path in the multicast packet received at the plurality of mesh nodes during a multicast operation.

15. The wireless mesh network central controller of claim 14 , the rules-based engine further comprising a multicast daemon configured to generate the one or more rules.

16. The wireless mesh network central controller of claim 14 , wherein the pre-routing parameter comprises the TTL parameter that is adjusted at each hop within the routing path of the wireless mesh network based at least in part on the one or more rules of the mesh nodes.

17. A method, comprising:

receiving one or more rules from a central server, the one or more rules based at least in part on at least one media consumer being recognized in a wireless mesh network, wherein the one or more rules comprise a first value for a pre-routing parameter of a multicast packet associated with the at least one media producer and a second value for the pre-routing parameter of the multicast packet associated with the at least one media consumer, the first value being lower than the second value, wherein the pre-routing parameter comprises a time-to-live (TTL) parameter that is adjusted at each hop within a routing path of the wireless mesh network according to the first value and the second value;

determining a change in the pre-routing parameter of the multicast packet based at least in part on receiving the one or more rules, the multicast packet being received at a mesh node during a multicast operation; and

implementing the determined change in the pre-routing parameter of the multicast packet.
