Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to a rotatable play device that comprises a central support post, a hub rotatably mounted to an upper end of the central support post, and a plurality of arms attached to the hub, wherein a seat is suspended from the distal end of each of the plurality of arms. Rotation of the hub about the central support post causes the plurality of seats to rotate around the central support post in a substantially circular rotation path. In addition, each of the seats may be configured to swing in substantial alignment with the circular rotation path. Each of the seats may also be configured to have at least a partially restricted range of motion toward the central support post, away from the central support post, or both.

Claims (26)

1. A play device comprising:

a support post;

a hub rotatably mounted to an upper end of the support post;

a plurality of arms extending away from the support post, each arm having a proximal end attached to the hub and a distal end that is configured to support a seat;

a plurality of seats, each seat being suspended from the distal end of an arm; and

a plurality of motion limiters configured to limit the movement of the plurality of seats in a direction toward the support post, a direction away from the support post, or both;

wherein rotation of the hub causes the plurality of seats to move around the support post in a substantially circular swing path, and each of the plurality of seats is configured to swing in substantial alignment with the circular swing path.

2. The play device of claim 1 , wherein the motion limiters is are configured so that the seats cannot substantially swing in a direction toward the support post.

3. The play device of claim 1 , wherein the motion limiters is are configured so that movement of the seats in a direction away from the support post is limited to 45° or less relative to a vertical axis.

4. The play device of claim 3 , wherein the motion limiters are configured so that movement of the seats in a direction away from the support post is limited to 35° or less relative to a vertical axis.

5. The play device of claim 4 , wherein the motion limiters are configured so that movement of the seats in a direction away from the support post is limited to 30° or less relative to a vertical axis.

6. The play device of claim 1 , wherein each of the seats is connected to the arm by one of the plurality of motion limiters.

7. The play device of claim 6 , in which

the seat comprises a mounting element having a shaft, and

the distal end of the arm comprises a aperture,

wherein the shaft and the aperture are configured so that the shaft rotates inside the aperture within a defined range.

8. The play device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the seats comprises a disc swing seat.

9. The play device of claim 8 , wherein each of the plurality of seats is a disc swing seat.

10. The play device of claim 8 , wherein the disc swing seat is suspended from the arm by a flexible cable.

11. The play device of claim 1 , in which at least one of the seats is configured for a child with limited physical abilities.

12. The play device of claim 1 , wherein the play device has three arms.

13. The play device of claim 12 , wherein the hub is configured so that the weight of the device is substantially evenly distributed between the three arms.

14. The play device of claim 1 , wherein each of the arms comprises one or more colored, translucent panels that are configured to produce a colored shadow on the ground.

15. The play device of claim 14 , wherein the one or more colored, translucent panels are attached to a framework, the framework being tilted between about 10° and about 20° degrees relative to a vertical axis.

16. The play device of claim 1 , wherein the hub defines a rotation axis that is angled between about 1° and about 20° relative to a vertical axis.

17. The play device of claim 16 , wherein the hub defines a rotation axis that is angled between about 5° and about 15° relative to a vertical axis.
