Solar panel
A high efficiency configuration for a solar cell module comprises solar cells arranged in an overlapping shingled manner and conductively bonded to each other in their overlapping regions to form super cells, which may be arranged to efficiently use the area of the solar module.
1. A solar module comprising:
a first super cell comprising a plurality of silicon solar cells, each comprising an n-p diode junction disposed between a front surface and an oppositely positioned rear surface of the silicon solar cell, the silicon solar cells arranged in line with sides of adjacent silicon solar cells overlapping in a shingled manner with, for pairs of adjacent silicon solar cells, a rear surface of one of the silicon solar cells overlapping and conductively bonded to a front surface of the other silicon solar cell to electrically and mechanically connect the silicon solar cells in series, a first one of the silicon solar cells arranged as a first end silicon solar cell at a first end of the super cell and a second one of the silicon solar cells arranged as a second end silicon solar cell at a second end of the super cell opposite from the first end of the super cell;
a first conductive metal ribbon conductively bonded to a metallization pattern disposed on the rear surface of the first end silicon solar cell and providing an electrical output from the super cell having a first polarity; and
a second conductive metal ribbon conductively bonded to a metallization pattern disposed on the rear surface of the second end silicon solar cell and providing an electrical output from the super cell having a second polarity opposite from the first polarity;
wherein the rear surfaces of the first and second end solar cells are on the n side of the n-p junction in the first and second end solar cells, or the rear surfaces of the first and second end solar cells are on the p side of the n-p junctions in the first and second end solar cells.
2. The solar module of claim 1 , wherein the second end silicon solar cell lacks front surface metallization present on each of the other silicon solar cells.
3. The solar module of claim 1 , wherein the second end silicon solar cell is a rejected silicon solar cell that fails a screening test passed by each of the other silicon solar cells.
4. The solar module of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of silicon solar cells have identical front and rear surface metallization.
5. The solar module of claim 1 , wherein:
the second end silicon solar cell comprises an outer edge positioned away from the super cell, protrusions defined by the outer edge of the second end silicon solar cell extending away from the second end silicon solar cell in a plane of the second end silicon solar cell and along a line of the super cell, and a plurality of rear surface discrete contact pads each of which is located on a rear surface of a corresponding protrusion; and
the second conductive metal ribbon is bonded to the discrete contact pads.
6. The solar module of claim 5 , in which the second conductive ribbon overlies the rear surfaces of the protrusions but does not overlie any other portions of the rear surface of the second end silicon solar cell.
7. The solar module of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of solar cells have identical dimensions, except for the second end silicon solar cell which is narrower than each of the other silicon solar cells as measured along a line of the super cell.

The solar module of claim 1 , comprising at least a second super cell identical to the first super cell and arranged in the solar module side-by-side and physically parallel with the first super cell, wherein at least one silicon solar cell located in the first super cell at a position intermediate between the ends of the first super cell is electrically connected to a correspondingly positioned solar cell in each of the other super cells by one or more conductive interconnects extending transversely to the super cells.
9. The solar module of claim 8 , wherein the one or more conductive interconnects extending transversely to the super cells electrically segment the first super cell into two or more groups of solar cells, and each group of solar cells is electrically in parallel with a corresponding bypass diode.
10. The solar module of claim 1 , wherein the first super cell spans or substantially spans the solar module from a first edge of the solar module to an oppositely positioned second edge of the solar module.
11. The solar module of claim 10 , wherein:
the first end silicon solar cell in the first super cell is located adjacent to and spaced apart from the first edge of the solar module by a first distance;
the second end silicon solar cell is located adjacent to and spaced apart from the second edge of the solar module by a second distance; and
the second distance is greater than the first distance such that the portion of the first super cell excluding the first end silicon solar cell is centered lengthwise along the solar module between the first edge and the second edge.
12. The solar module of claim 1 , wherein:
each of the plurality of silicon solar cells have identical front and rear surface metallization;
the second end silicon solar cell comprises an outer edge positioned away from the super cell, protrusions defined by the outer edge of the second end silicon solar cell extending away from the second end silicon solar cell in a plane of the second end silicon solar cell and along a line of the super cell, and a plurality of rear surface discrete contact pads each of which is located on a rear surface of a corresponding protrusion;
the second conductive metal ribbon is bonded to the discrete contact pads; and
the second conductive ribbon overlies the rear surfaces of the protrusions but does not overlie any other portions of the rear surface of the second end silicon solar cell.
13. The solar module of claim 1 , comprising at least a second super cell identical to the first super cell and arranged in the solar module side-by-side and physically parallel with the first super cell; wherein:
at least one silicon solar cell located in the first super cell at a position intermediate between the ends of the first super cell is electrically connected to a correspondingly positioned solar cell in each of the other super cells by one or more conductive interconnects extending transversely to the super cells; and
each of the plurality of silicon solar cells in each of the super cells have identical front and rear surface metallization.

The solar module of claim 13 , wherein the one or more conductive interconnects extending transversely to the super cells electrically segment the first super cell into two or more groups of solar cells, and each group of solar cells is electrically in parallel with a corresponding bypass diode.
15. The solar module of claim 1 , wherein:
each of the plurality of silicon solar cells have identical front and rear surface metallization; and
the first super cell spans or substantially spans the solar module from a first edge of the solar module to an oppositely positioned second edge of the solar module.
16. The solar module of claim 15 , wherein:
the first end silicon solar cell in the first super cell is located adjacent to and spaced apart from the first edge of the solar module by a first distance;
the second end silicon solar cell is located adjacent to and spaced apart from the second edge of the solar module by a second distance; and
the second distance is greater than the first distance such that the portion of the first super cell excluding the first end silicon solar cell is centered lengthwise along the solar module between the first edge and the second edge.
17. The solar module of claim 1 , comprising at least a second super cell identical to the first super cell and arranged in the solar module side-by-side and physically parallel with the first super cell, wherein, in each of the super cells:
the second end silicon solar cell comprises an outer edge positioned away from the super cell, protrusions defined by the outer edge of the second end silicon solar cell extending away from the second end silicon solar cell in a plane of the second end silicon solar cell and along a line of the super cell, and a plurality of rear surface discrete contact pads each of which is located on a rear surface of a corresponding protrusion;
the second conductive ribbon overlies the rear surfaces of the protrusions but does not overlie-any other portions of the rear surface of the second end silicon solar cell;
the second conductive metal ribbon is bonded to the discrete contact pads; and
at least one silicon solar cell located in the first super cell at a position intermediate between the ends of the first super cell is electrically connected to a correspondingly positioned solar cell in each of the other super cells by one or more conductive interconnects extending transversely to the super cells.
18. The solar module of claim 17 , wherein the one or more conductive interconnects extending transversely to the super cells electrically segment the first super cell into two or more groups of solar cells, and each group of solar cells is electrically in parallel with a corresponding bypass diode.
19. The solar module of claim 1 , wherein:
the second end silicon solar cell comprises an outer edge positioned away from the super cell, protrusions defined by the outer edge of the second end silicon solar cell extending away from the second end silicon solar cell in a plane of the second end silicon solar cell and along a line of the super cell, and a plurality of rear surface discrete contact pads each of which is located on a rear surface of a corresponding protrusion; and
the second conductive metal ribbon is bonded to the discrete contact pads;
the second conductive ribbon overlies the rear surfaces of the protrusions but does not overlie any other portions of the rear surface of the second end silicon solar cell; and
the first super cell spans or substantially spans the solar module from a first edge of the solar module to an oppositely positioned second edge of the solar module.
20. The solar module of claim 1 , comprising at least a second super cell identical to the first super cell and arranged in the solar module side-by-side and physically parallel with the first super cell, wherein, in each of the super cells:
each of the plurality of silicon solar cells have identical front and rear surface metallization;
the second end silicon solar cell comprises an outer edge positioned away from the super cell, protrusions defined by the outer edge of the second end silicon solar cell extending away from the second end silicon solar cell in a plane of the second end silicon solar cell and along a line of the super cell, and a plurality of rear surface discrete contact pads each of which is located on a rear surface of a corresponding protrusion;
the second conductive ribbon overlies the rear surfaces of the protrusions but does not overlie-any other portions of the rear surface of the second end silicon solar cell;
the second conductive metal ribbon is bonded to the discrete contact pads;
at least one silicon solar cell located in the first super cell at a position intermediate between the ends of the first super cell is electrically connected to a correspondingly positioned solar cell in each of the other super cells by one or more conductive interconnects extending transversely to the super cells; and
the first super cell spans or substantially spans the solar module from a first edge of the solar module to an oppositely positioned second edge of the solar module.
