Abstract

The disclosure relates to light barrier compositions, methods of making the compositions, articles prepared from the compositions, and methods of making the articles. This abstract is intended as a scanning tool for purposes of searching in the particular art and is not intended to be limiting of the present invention.

Claims (27)

1. A polymer blend composition consisting essentially of:

(a) polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in an amount of at least 85 wt %;

(b) a colorant in an amount of from 1 wt % to 3 wt % based on the weight of the composition; and

(c) polymethyl pentene in an amount of from 1 wt % to 15 wt % based on the weight of the composition,

wherein the composition does not contain polystyrene in an amount of greater than 5 wt %, and

wherein the transmittance is less than 0.5% at a wavelength of from 500 nm to 600 nm.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the PET is present in an amount of from 85 wt % to 95 wt % based on the weight of the composition.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition further consists essentially of an aliphatic polyester.

4. The composition of claim 3 , wherein the aliphatic polyester is polylactic acid (PLA).

5. The composition of claim 4 , wherein the aliphatic polyester is present in an amount of from 5 wt % to 25 wt % based on the weight of the composition.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the colorant is selected from the group consisting of a white colorant, an opaque colorant, and a translucent colorant.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the colorant comprises titanium dioxide.

8. An article comprising the composition of claim 1 .

9. A polymer blend composition consisting essentially of:

(a) polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in an amount of from 85 wt % to 95 wt % based on the weight of the composition;

(b) a colorant in an amount of from 1 wt % to 3 wt % based on the weight of the composition; and

(c) polymethyl pentene in an amount of from 1 wt % to 15 wt % based on the weight of the composition,

wherein the composition does not contain polystyrene, and

wherein the transmittance is less than 0.5% at a wavelength of from 500 nm to about 600 nm.

10. The composition of claim 9 , wherein the colorant comprises titanium dioxide.

11. An article comprising the composition of claim 9 .

12. A polymer blend composition consisting of:

(a) polyethylene terephthalate (PET);

(b) a colorant; and

(c) polymethyl pentene,

wherein polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is present in an amount of from 85 wt % to 95 wt % based on the weight of the composition, the colorant is present in an amount of from 1 wt % to 3 wt % based on the weight of the composition, and polymethyl pentene is present in an amount of from 1 wt % to 15 wt % based on the weight of the composition, and wherein the colorant comprises titanium dioxide, and

wherein the transmittance is less than 0.5% at a wavelength of from 500 nm to 600 nm.
