Abstract

An exemplary method accelerating content delivery via DNS overriding may comprise the steps of generating a routing table for a content delivery network (CDN), the routing table map one or more edge server IP addresses to each of one or more geographic regions, transmitting the routing table to one or more DNS server computers, receiving a request from a registrant of a domain name to subscribe the domain name to the CDN, and designating said domain name as subscribed to the CDN in a DNS zone for the domain name.

Claims (52)

1. A system, comprising at least one processor executing instructions within a memory coupled to a server computer coupled to a network, the instructions causing the server computer to:

receive a transmission encoding a routing request comprising a uniform resource locator (URL) mapping the routing request to a web resource;

decode the routing request to identify:

a domain name within the URL; and

a geographic region from which the routing request originated;

access a zone file identifying a zone for the domain name and stored on a domain name system (DNS) server;

responsive to a determination that the zone file includes a type specific subscription data field encoding a subscription of the domain name to a content delivery network (CDN):

access a routing table for the CDN;

identify, within the routing table, an internet protocol (IP) address of a content server, the IP address mapped, within the routing table, to the geographic region from which the routing request originated; and

route the resource request to the IP address.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions cause the server computer to identify the geographic region from a client IP address or an internet service provider IP address from which the routing request originated.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions cause the server computer, responsive to a determination that the zone file does not include the type specific subscription data field, to route the resource request to an origin server within the CDN.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the server computer is the DNS server;

the routing table is stored on the server computer; and

the DNS server is configured to generate the routing table from the zone file.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein a domain name registrant of the domain name subscribes the domain name to the CDN upon registration of the domain name.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein, responsive to the domain name registrant subscribing the domain name to the CDN, the instructions cause the server computer to insert the type specific subscription data field into the zone file.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the routing table is generated by an origin server or a network storage device; and

the routing table is stored within a data storage or cache storage coupled to the origin server or the network storage device.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the network storage device transmits the routing table to a plurality of network storage devices within the CDN, the plurality of network storage devices comprising a plurality of routers, switches, edge servers, DNS servers, or database servers.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the routing table encodes a routing behavior comprising:

a first routing behavior configured to route the resource request to an origin server;

a second routing behavior configured to route the resource request to a primary edge server in the CDN; and

a third routing behavior configured to route the resource request to a secondary edge server in the CDN.

10. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a server computer coupled to a network and comprising at least one processor executing instructions within a memory coupled to the server computer, a transmission encoding a routing request comprising a uniform resource locator (URL) mapping the routing request to a web resource;

decoding, by the server computer, the routing request to identify:

a domain name within the URL; and

a geographic region from which the routing request originated;

accessing, by the server computer, a zone file identifying a zone for the domain name and stored on a domain name system (DNS) server;

responsive to a determination that the zone file includes a type specific subscription data field encoding a subscription of the domain name to a content delivery network (CDN):

accessing, by the server computer, a routing table for the CDN;

identifying, by the server computer, within the routing table, an internet protocol (IP) address of a content server, the IP address mapped, within the routing table, to the geographic region from which the routing request originated; and

routing, by the server computer, the resource request to the IP address.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising the step of identifying, by the server computer, the geographic region from a client IP address or an internet service provider IP address from which the routing request originated.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the instructions cause the server computer, responsive to a determination that the zone file does not include the type specific subscription data field, to route the resource request to an origin server within the CDN.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the server computer is the DNS server;

the routing table is stored on the server computer; and

the DNS server is configured to generate the routing table from the zone file.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein a domain name registrant of the domain name subscribes the domain name to the CDN upon registration of the domain name.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising the step of, responsive to the domain name registrant subscribing the domain name to the CDN, inserting, by the server computer, the type specific subscription data field into the zone file.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the routing table is generated by an origin server or a network storage device; and

the routing table is stored within a data storage or cache storage coupled to the origin server or the network storage device.

The method of claim 16 , further comprising the step of transmitting, by the network storage device, the routing table to a plurality of network storage devices within the CDN, the plurality of network storage devices comprising a plurality of routers, switches, edge servers, DNS servers, or database servers.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the routing table encodes a routing behavior comprising:

a first routing behavior configured to route the resource request to an origin server;

a second routing behavior configured to route the resource request to a primary edge server in the CDN; and

a third routing behavior configured to route the resource request to a secondary edge server in the CDN.
