Abstract

Optical connector arrangements terminate at least seventy-two optical fibers. The optical connector arrangements include multiple optical ferrules that each terminates multiple optical fibers. Some example optical connectors can terminate about 144 optical fibers. Each optical connector includes a fiber take-up arrangement and a flange extending outwardly from a connector housing arrangement. The fiber take-up arrangement manages excess length of the optical fibers. A threadable coupling nut can be disposed on the connector housing arrangement to engage the outwardly extending flange. Certain types of optical connector arrangements include furcation cables spacing the connector housing arrangement form the fiber take-up arrangement.

Claims (27)

1. A multi-fiber cable assembly comprising:

a multi-fiber cable including a plurality of optical fibers, a strength member, and an outer jacket;

a plug connector housing terminating the multi-fiber cable, the plug connector housing anchoring the strength member, the plug connector housing extending along a longitudinal axis from a first end to a second end, the plug connector housing defining a periphery that extends between the first and second ends, the first end of the plug connector housing receiving the multi-fiber cable, the second end of the plug connector housing defining an end face, the plug connector housing holding a plurality of optical ferrules at which ends of the optical fibers are held, the optical ferrules being accessible at the end face of the plug connector housing; and

a twist-to-lock fastener that mounts around the periphery of the plug connector housing and that is rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the plug connector housing, the twist-to-lock fastener having engagement structure that enables the twist-to-lock fastener to couple to a component, thereby securing the plug connector housing to the component.

2. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein the optical fibers are separated into groups within the plug connector housing, wherein each optical ferrule receives the ends of the optical fibers within a respective one of the groups.

3. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 2 , wherein each of the optical ferrules includes an MPO ferrule.

4. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 2 , wherein one of the optical ferrules has a different rotational orientation from another of the optical ferrules.

5. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 2 , wherein the optical ferrules have a common rotational orientation.

6. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein one of the optical ferrules has a different rotational orientation from another of the optical ferrules.

7. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein the optical ferrules have a common rotational orientation.

8. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 2 , wherein the optical ferrules are disposed in multiple rows.

9. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein the optical ferrules are disposed in multiple rows.

10. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plug connector housing includes a fiber take-up arrangement at which excess length of the optical fibers is stored.

11. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 10 , wherein the fiber take-up arrangement includes a fiber mandrel disposed within a cavity defined by the plug connector housing.

12. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein the multi-fiber cable is environmentally sealed to the plug connector housing.

13. A multi-fiber cable assembly comprising:

a plug connector housing extending along a longitudinal axis from a first end to a second end, the second end of the plug connector housing defining an end face at which a plurality of optical ferrules are accessible; and

a multi-fiber cable including a plurality of optical fibers, a strength member, and an outer jacket, the multi-fiber cable being received at the first end of the plug connector housing, the optical fibers being routed through the plug connector housing to the optical ferrules, the strength member being anchored at the plug connector housing;

a twist-to-lock fastener that mounts around the plug connector housing; and

a dust cap that mounts over the plug connector housing to cover the optical ferrules, the dust cap securing to the twist-to-lock fastener.

14. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 13 , wherein the optical ferrules are arranged in a row at the end face.

15. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 13 , wherein the optical ferrules are biased through openings defined in the end face with springs.

16. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 13 , wherein the optical ferrules are oriented in a common direction.

17. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 13 , wherein the twist-to-lock fastener includes a nut defining external threads.

18. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 13 , wherein the dust cap includes a body extending along a length between a closed end and an open end, the body defining an interior, the open end being configured to secure to the twist-to-lock fastener while the end face of the plug connector housing is received within the interior.

19. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 18 , wherein the body of the dust cap includes internal threads at the open end.

20. The multi-fiber cable assembly of claim 13 , wherein the twist-to-lock fastener is disposed towards the second end of the plug connector housing.
