Abstract

Systems and related methods for enhancing learning of a motor task are described. The system controls delivery of an example or prompt to the subject via one or more of an audio, video, or other output device. A learning enhancing transcutaneous neural stimulus is delivered in association with the example or prompt. Electrical control circuitry controls timing of delivery of neural stimuli and prompts or examples. The system may be implemented in connection with a personal computing device, for example.

Claims (47)

1. A method of training a subject to perform a complex motor task, comprising:

presenting to a subject, via at least one of an audio output device and a visual output device under control of a controller of a personal computing device, a priming example of a complex motor task, the complex motor task including activation of a plurality of muscles, wherein presenting the priming example includes presenting at least one of an audiovisual representation of the complex motor task, a visual representation of the complex motor task, or an audio sequence corresponding to the complex motor task;

instructing the subject, via at least one of an audio output device and a visual output device under control of the controller, to mentally rehearse the complex motor task during at least one presentation of a rehearsal example of the complex motor task;

providing to the subject, via at least one of an audio output device and a visual output device under control of the controller, a notification of a start of at least one presentation of the rehearsal example;

presenting to the subject, via at least one of an audio output device and a visual output device under control of the controller, the rehearsal example;

delivering to the subject, via a neural stimulus source under control of the controller, a learning enhancing neural stimulus during or immediately after at least one presentation of the rehearsal example; and

repeating, under control of the controller, presenting the rehearsal example to the subject for a training period.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the priming example is different from the rehearsal example.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the priming example is the same as the rehearsal example.

4. The method of claim 1 , including detecting performance of at least a portion of the complex motor task by the subject with a sensing system.

5. The method of claim 4 , including providing feedback to the subject with a feedback system regarding performance of the at least a portion of the complex motor task by the subject.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein providing feedback to the subject includes providing feedback with at least one of a display, a light, a speaker, a vibrator, a force applying element, an electrical stimulator, or an olfactory stimulus source.

The method of claim 4 , wherein detecting performance of the at least a portion of the complex motor task includes at least one of detecting performance of a mental activity by the subject, detecting performance of a physical activity by the subject, detecting performance of two or more related physical or mental activities by the subject, detecting a signal with an EEG sensor, detecting a signal with an EMG sensor, detecting a signal with an oxygenation sensor, detecting a signal with a motion sensor, detecting a signal with a pressure sensor, detecting a signal with a force sensor, detecting a signal with an accelerometer, detecting a signal with an inclinometer, detecting a signal with an implantable sensor, detecting a signal with a remote camera, detecting a signal with a microphone detecting a signal with a wearable sensor, detecting a signal with a sensor carried by the subject, detecting a signal with a sensor in an instrument, detecting a signal with a sensor on an instrument, detecting a signal with a sensor in an implement, detecting a signal with a sensor on an implement, detecting a signal with a sensor in an article of equipment carried by the subject, or detecting a signal with a sensor on an article of equipment carried by the subject.

8. The method of claim 1 , including delivering a secondary stimulus to the subject with a secondary stimulus source.

The method of claim 8 , wherein delivering the secondary stimulus to the subject includes delivering a stimulus with at least one of a TENS unit, a muscle stimulator, a nerve stimulator, a mechanical assist device, a mechanical stimulator, a mechanical restraint, a thermal stimulator, a force applying element, an olfactory stimulus source, gustatory stimulus source, a nociceptive stimulus source, a vibrator, or an auditory stimulus source.

10. The method of claim 1 , including

creating a practice session schedule;

storing the practice session schedule in a data storage location operatively coupled to the controller; and

generating reminders for delivery to the subject via at least one user interface device operably coupled to controller to remind the subject of one or more practice sessions from the practice session schedule stored in the data storage location.

11. The method of claim 10 , including

tracking, with a tracking module, practice session data relating to at least one practice session during which the subject practices the complex motor task; and

storing the tracked practice session data in the data storage location.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the practice session data includes at least one of a time of at least one practice session, a date of at least one practice session, or a duration of at least one practice session.

The method of claim 11 , including at least one of generating practice session trends or metrics based on one or more tracked practice sessions; reporting, with reporting circuitry, information regarding one or more tracked practice sessions, practice session trends, or practice session metrics to one or more of the subject, a parent, an instructor, a coach, a medical care provider, a peer, or a computing system; providing reports based on the tracked practice session data to a scoring module; assigning, with a scoring module, a score or ranking to the subject based on the performance of the subject during the one or more tracked practice sessions; assigning, with the scoring module, a score or ranking to the subject based on the subject's performance relative to the performance of one or more other individuals; transferring, with a reward module, a reward to the subject account based upon the tracked practice session data; or providing positive feedback to the subject via a user interface.

14. The method of claim 1 , including sensing, with an attention sensor, at least one parameter indicative of attentiveness of the subject.

The method of claim 14 , wherein sensing the at least one parameter indicative of attentiveness of the subject includes at least one of sensing a signal with an EEG sensor, sensing a signal with an eye tracking sensor, sensing a signal with an EMG sensor, sensing a signal with a motion sensor, sensing a signal with a force sensor, sensing a signal with a pressure sensor, sensing a signal with an accelerometer, sensing a signal with a wearable sensor, or sensing a signal with a camera.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein presenting the priming example includes presenting at least one of a video recording of a performance of the complex motor task or an animation representing one or more aspects of the complex motor task.

The method of claim 1 , wherein presenting the priming example includes presenting at least one of verbal instructions or cues for performance of multiple components of the complex motor task, a plurality of tones or pitches synchronized to sequential components of the complex motor task, or music corresponding to sequential components of the complex motor task.

The method of claim 1 , wherein presenting the rehearsal example includes presenting at least one of an audiovisual representation of the complex motor task, a visual representation of the complex motor task; an audio sequence corresponding to the complex motor task, a video recording of a performance of the complex motor task, or an animation representing one or more aspects of the complex motor task.

The method of claim 1 , wherein presenting the rehearsal example includes presenting at least one of verbal instructions or cues for performance of multiple components the complex motor task, a plurality of tones or pitches synchronized to sequential components of the complex motor task, or music corresponding to sequential components of the complex motor task.

The method of claim 1 , wherein delivering the learning enhancing neural stimulus includes at least one of delivering a transcutaneous neural stimulus, delivering a stimulus to a cranial nerve of the subject, delivering a stimulus to a vagal nerve of the subject, delivering a stimulus to a trigeminal nerve of the subject, delivering a stimulus to a glossopharyngeal nerve of the subject, delivering a stimulus to a peripheral neural structure innervating a pinna of the ear of the subject, delivering a stimulus to a peripheral neural structure innervating an ear canal of the ear of the subject, or delivering a stimulus to a peripheral neural structure innervating a concha of the ear of the subject.

The method of claim 1 , including at least one of receiving with an interface device a control input for setting stimulation parameters for controlling delivery of the learning enhancing neural stimulus by the neural stimulus source, sending a communication from the controller to a computing or communication network, receiving a communication at the controller from the computing or communication network, via communication circuitry operably coupled to the controller, or providing an output to the subject and receiving an input from the subject via a user interface device.

22. A computer program product, comprising:

at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium bearing

one or more instructions for presenting to a subject, via at least one of an audio output device and a visual output device under control of a controller of a personal computing device, a priming example of a complex motor task, the complex motor task including activation of a plurality of muscles wherein presenting the priming example includes presenting at least one of an audiovisual representation of the complex motor task, a visual representation of the complex motor task, or an audio sequence corresponding to the complex motor task;

one or more instructions for instructing the subject, via at least one of an audio output device and a visual output device under control of the controller, to mentally rehearse the complex motor task during at least one presentation of a rehearsal example of the complex motor task;

one or more instructions for providing to the subject, via at least one of an audio output device and a visual output device under control of the controller, a notification of a start of at least one presentation of the rehearsal example;

one or more instructions for presenting to the subject, via at least one of an audio output device and a visual output device under control of the controller, the rehearsal example;

one or more instructions for delivering to the subject, via a neural stimulus source under control of the controller, a learning enhancing neural stimulus during or immediately after at least one presentation of the rehearsal example; and

one or more instructions for repeating, under control of the controller, presenting the rehearsal example to the subject for a training period.

23. The computer program product of claim 22 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium bears

one or more instructions for creating a practice session schedule;

one or more instructions for storing the practice session schedule in a data storage location operatively coupled to the controller; and

one or more instructions for generating reminders for delivery to the subject via at least one user interface device operably coupled to controller to remind the subject of one or more practice sessions from the practice session schedule stored in the data storage location.

24. The method of claim 22 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium bears

one or more instructions for tracking, with a tracking module, practice session data relating to at least one practice session during which the subject practices the complex motor task; and

one or more instructions for storing the tracked practice session data in a data storage location.
