Abstract

A surgical instrument comprises a shaft assembly comprising a shaft and an end effector coupled to a distal end of the shaft; a handle assembly coupled to a proximal end of the shaft; a battery assembly coupled to the handle assembly; a driver configured to drive movement of at least one component of the surgical instrument; a motor powered by the battery assembly and configured to actuate the driver using an output of the motor; and a controller for the motor, configured to perform a limiting operation to the output of the motor when a limiting condition is met, wherein the limiting condition is determined based at least in part on a tissue characteristic.

Claims (45)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a modular shaft assembly comprising a shaft and an end effector coupled to a distal end of the shaft;

a modular handle assembly configured to be coupled to a proximal end of the modular shaft assembly and detachable from the proximal end of the modular shaft assembly;

a modular battery assembly configured to:

be coupled to the modular shaft assembly and detachable from the modular shaft assembly;

identify at least one functional characteristic of the surgical instrument when coupled to the modular handle assembly;

adjust power output of the modular battery assembly to the modular handle assembly based on the at least one identified functional characteristic;

determine a type of surgical procedure being performed or to be performed by the modular handle assembly; and

based on the determination, transition to a non-operational state if there is not enough power within the modular battery assembly to complete the type of surgical procedure;

a driver configured to drive movement of at least one component of the surgical instrument;

a motor powered by the modular battery assembly and configured to actuate the driver using an output of the motor; and

a controller for the motor, configured to perform a limiting operation to the output of the motor when a limiting condition is met, wherein the limiting condition is determined based at least in part on a tissue characteristic.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the end effector comprises at least two sensors configured to detect tissue presence, and the tissue characteristic is an amount of tissue detected by the at least two sensors.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the tissue characteristic is tissue thickness.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein the limiting condition is a maximum velocity of the motor determined based at least in part on the tissue thickness.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to apply a delay between when the driver is first actuated and when the driver is actuated again, wherein a length of the delay is determined based at least in part on the tissue characteristic.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the at least one functional characteristic comprises at least one of: a time when the modular handle assembly was last used, a time duration of how long the modular handle assembly was last used, what surgical function was the modular handle assembly last used for, a count of how many times the modular handle assembly was used, and a sum total time of how long the modular handle assembly has been used across all uses.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a cableless, modular generator assembly configured to be coupled to the modular handle assembly and detachable from the modular handle assembly, and configured to generate at least one of ultrasonic energy or radio frequency (RF) energy to be applied to the end effector.

8. A method for operating a surgical instrument, the surgical instrument comprising a shaft assembly comprising a shaft and an end effector coupled to a distal end of the shaft, and a handle assembly coupled to a proximal end of the shaft, the method comprising:

actuating a driver using an output of a battery-powered motor;

driving, with the driver, movement of a first component of the surgical instrument;

determining, based at least in part on a tissue characteristic, a first limiting condition and a second limiting condition, where the first limiting condition provides a higher limiting threshold than the second limiting condition;

performing a first limiting operation to the output of the motor by decreasing the output of the motor when the output reaches the first limiting condition, wherein the first limiting operation controls the movement of the first component;

performing a second limiting operation to the output of the motor by increasing the output of the motor when the output falls below the second limiting condition, wherein the second limiting operation controls the movement of the first component;

determining a third limiting condition; and

performing a third limiting operation to the output of the motor, wherein the third limiting operation controls movement of a second component of the surgical instrument;

wherein the motor is configured to control movement of both the first component and the second component.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the tissue characteristic is tissue thickness.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first limiting condition is a maximum velocity of the motor determined based at least in part on the tissue thickness.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

applying a delay between when the driver is first actuated and when the driver is actuated again, wherein a length of the delay is determined based at least in part on the tissue characteristic.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the first, second, and third limiting conditions is a non-linear limiting condition such that the respective associated first, second, and third limiting operation varies a limit of the output of the motor based on a change of a structural characteristic of the first component or the second component.

13. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft assembly comprising a shaft and an end effector coupled to a distal end of the shaft;

a handle assembly coupled to a proximal end of the shaft;

a battery assembly coupled to the handle assembly;

a motor powered by the battery assembly and configured to actuate the driver using an output of the motor; and

a controller for the motor, configured to:

provide a tactile feedback felt by a user through physical movement initiated by the surgical instrument to indicate an error has occurred, the error comprising the transducer having a mismatched frequency with the driver.

14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the tactile feedback comprises a vibration pattern of the surgical instrument.

15. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the transducer is configured to treat a tissue.
