Abstract

An integrated circuit includes: a radio-frequency (RF) to direct current (DC) rectifying circuit coupled to one or more antenna on an implantable wirelessly powered device, the rectifying circuit configured to: rectify an input RF signal received at the one or more antennas and from an external controller through electric radiative coupling; and extract DC electric power and configuration data from the input RF signal; a logic control circuit connected to the rectifying circuit and a driving circuit, the logic control circuit configured to: generate a current for the driving circuit solely using the extracted DC electrical power; in accordance with the extracted configuration data, set polarity state information for each electrode; and a driving circuit coupled to one or more electrode, the driving circuit comprising current mirrors and being configured to: steer, to each electrode and via the current mirrors, a stimulating current solely from the generated current.

rectify an input RF signal non-inductively received at the one or more non-loop antennas and from an external controller through electric radiative coupling; and

extract DC electric energy and configuration data from the input RF signal;

a logic control circuit connected to the rectifying circuit, the logic control circuit configured to:

generate a current solely using the extracted DC electrical energy;

in accordance with the extracted configuration data, set polarity state information and stimulating current information for each electrode; and

a driving circuit coupled to the logic control circuit and two or more electrodes, the driving circuit comprising a shunt resistor controller capable of temporally, during a stimulus cycle, inserting a variable shunt resistor into the driving circuit, one or more current mirrors, a switch network capable of temporally, during the stimulus cycle, coupling the one or more current mirrors and the variable shunt resistor to each electrode,

wherein the driving circuit is configured to:

steer, to each electrode and from the one or more current mirrors coupled thereto during a stimulating phase of the stimulus cycle, a corresponding stimulating current, derived solely from the extracted DC electrical energy, to modulate neural tissue within the patient's body in accordance with the polarity state information and the stimulating current information set by the logic control circuit for each electrode;

following the stimulating phase and during a charge balancing phase of the stimulus cycle, steer, to each electrode and from the variable shunt resistor, a corresponding charge balancing current, such that the corresponding stimulating current and the corresponding charge balancing current in combination result in a substantially zero net charge at each electrode when the stimulus cycle ends; and

wherein the shunt resistor controller couples a variable shunt resistor to each electrode through the switch network when the stimulus cycle transitions from the stimulating phase to the charge balancing phase during the stimulus cycle.

2. The integrated circuit of claim 1 ,

wherein the stimulating current at each of the two or more electrodes is determined by a current mirror ratio and wherein the extracted configuration data comprises the current mirror ratio.

3. The integrated circuit of claim 2 , wherein the current mirror ratio matches the stimulating current information.
