Abstract

The illumination system includes an arthroscope, endoscope or other surgical tool and an attachable cannula including a transparent or semi-transparent material capable of carrying light from the proximal end to the distal end of the cannula, illuminating the surgical field through components that do not occupy space that may otherwise be used for the optics of an arthroscope. The arthroscopic illumination system further includes one or more illumination sources at the proximal end of the cannula. The illumination source may be optically coupled with the cannula at the hub or other location. The cannula includes a sterilizable polymer which functions as a waveguide, which is a material medium that confines and guides light. When in use, the light source connected to the hub provides light which may be guided to the distal end of the cannula or any other location. Thus, the sheath provides structure-guided illumination of the surgical site.

Claims (16)

1. A surgical illuminator comprising:

a generally cylindrical light waveguide formed from a single generally uniform element without optical fibers, wherein the light waveguide is configured to transmit light using total internal reflection, wherein the light waveguide has a bore defining an internal space from a proximal end to a distal end, wherein the bore is sited to receive one or more surgical instruments in the internal space defined by the bore;

an illumination conduit having an input and an output for conducting illumination energy from an illumination source at the input, the input being solid, the output surrounding an access channel in communication with the bore, wherein the access channel defines a through-hole at the output, wherein the access channel does not extend to the input of the illumination conduit, the illumination conduit having an access port in communication with the access channel, wherein the access port and the access channel provide access to the bore for the one or more surgical instruments, wherein the access port extends along a contour of the illumination conduit from the output towards the input; and

an adapter ring rotationally coupling the light waveguide to the illumination conduit, wherein the adapter ring engages the illumination conduit and simultaneously couples illumination energy from the illumination conduit to the light waveguide for surgery, wherein the adapter ring engages the light waveguide while permitting relative rotational movement between the illumination conduit and the light waveguide such that the light waveguide illuminates at a plurality of different rotational positions relative to the illumination conduit,

wherein the light waveguide, the illumination conduit, and the adapter ring are non-continuous.

2. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 wherein the light waveguide is flexible.

3. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 wherein the light waveguide is rigid.

4. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 wherein the illumination conduit comprises a plurality of optical fibers.

5. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 wherein the illumination conduit and the light waveguide are formed of the same material.

6. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , further comprising a coating on exterior surfaces of the light waveguide to help prevent light leakage while assisting with the total internal reflection.

7. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein the adapter ring is rotatable about a centerline of the bore of the light waveguide.

8. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein a center axis of the input of the illumination conduit is transverse to a longitudinal axis of the bore of the light waveguide.

9. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein the access channel and the access port are configured such that the illumination conduit has a shape, which transitions from a solid portion at the input to a ring shape defined by the through-hole at the output.

10. A surgical illumination system comprising:

the surgical illuminator of claim 1 ; and

the illumination source operably coupled to the light waveguide, the illumination source including a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
