Abstract

An illumination system includes a surgical tool and an attachable cannula comprising a transparent or semi-transparent material capable of carrying light from the proximal end to the distal end of the cannula, thereby illuminating the surgical field through components that do not occupy space that may otherwise be used for optics of the tool. The illumination system further comprises one or more illumination sources disposed at the proximal end. The illumination source may be optically coupled with the cannula at the hub or other appropriate location. The cannula comprises a sterilizable polymer which functions as a waveguide. A waveguide is a material medium that confines and guides light. When in use, the light source connected to the hub provides light which may be guided to the distal end of the cannula or any other suitable location. Thus, the sheath provides structure-guided illumination resulting in the illumination of the surgical site.

Claims (27)

1. A surgical illuminator comprising:

a generally cylindrical light waveguide having a distal portion, a proximal portion, an outer surface, and an inner surface defining a bore extending from the proximal portion to the distal portion, wherein the bore is sized to accommodate one or more instruments or tools extending from the proximal portion through the distal portion, wherein the light waveguide is configured to conduct illumination energy (i) from the proximal portion to the distal portion and (ii) around a circumference of the light waveguide; and

a suction structure defining a channel extending along the inner surface from the proximal portion to the distal portion, wherein the suction structure defines an input at a distal end of the suction structure, wherein the suction structure is configured to receive smoke from the bore at the input and evacuate the smoke proximally along the channel out of the light waveguide.

2. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein the light waveguide is flexible.

3. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein the light waveguide is rigid.

4. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein the outer surface of the light waveguide is coated with a coating to prevent light leakage.

5. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion of the light waveguide comprises at least one of a microstructure, an optical component, or a diffuse finish.

6. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , further comprising at least one of a reflective or refractive optical assembly operably coupled to the light waveguide.

7. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein the input of the suction structure comprises an aperture that is oriented orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the bore defined by the inner surface of the light waveguide.

8. The surgical illuminator of claim 7 , wherein the input of the suction structure comprises a lower lip that extends inwardly from the inner surface of the light waveguide.

9. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein the input of the suction structure comprises an aperture that is oriented parallel to a longitudinal axis of the bore defined by the inner surface of the light waveguide.

10. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein a proximal end of the suction structure is configured to couple to a tube of a vacuum source.

11. The surgical illuminator of claim 10 , further comprising a clamp coupled to the proximal portion of the light waveguide and configured to couple to the tube of the vacuum source.

12. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , further comprising an air filter configured to remove an airborne impurity.

13. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein the suction structure comprises a debris filter configured to block debris from entering the channel of the suction structure.

14. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein the suction structure comprises a plurality of suction openings along the suction structure.

15. The surgical illuminator of claim 14 , wherein a proximal-most one of the plurality of suction openings has a smaller size than a distal-most one of the plurality of suction openings.

16. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , wherein the outer surface of the light waveguide has a shape that tapers inwardly at the distal portion.

17. An illumination system comprising:

the surgical illuminator of claim 1 ; and

an illumination source operably coupled with the light waveguide, the illumination source including a plurality of LEDs.

18. The surgical illuminator of claim 1 , further comprising an illumination conduit having a reflective surface at a proximal-most end of the light waveguide for directing the illumination energy from the illumination conduit into the light waveguide.

19. A surgical illuminator comprising:

a generally cylindrical light waveguide having a distal portion, a proximal portion, an outer surface and an open bore from the proximal portion to the distal portion, the bore sized to accommodate one or more instruments or tools extending from the proximal portion through the distal portion, the light waveguide conducting illumination energy from the proximal portion to a plurality of optical structures distal of the proximal portion by reflection, wherein the plurality of optical structures comprise facets, microstructures, or lenses; and

an illumination conduit having a reflective surface for directing the illumination energy into the light waveguide;

wherein the generally cylindrical light waveguide is formed by shaping the illumination conduit into a spiral around the bore of the light waveguide.

20. The surgical illuminator of claim 18 , further comprising two or more illumination conduits.
