Abstract

Surgical instruments, implantable articles and surgical procedures disclosed for treating medical disorders, particularly incontinence. Improved surgical sling procedures are disclosed. Novel surgical instruments and kits for use in sling procedures are also disclosed. The present invention affords options for surgeons with concomitant advantages to the patient and the healthcare provider.

Claims (24)

1. An implant system for treating a pelvic condition in a patient, comprising:

an implant including a support portion and one or more extension portions, with the one or more extension portions including an end portion;

a needle device including a needle having an interior lumen and a movable member, wherein the movable member includes a snap engagement feature to selectively engage the end portion; and

a handle having an actuator, with the actuator in operable communication with the movable member, wherein the movable member is biased in an extended position and the actuator is adapted to retract the movable member within the needle.

2. The implant system of claim 1 , further including visual indicia to facilitate centering a portion of the implant relative to target support tissue.

3. The implant system of claim 1 , further including a sheath having first and second portions adapted to overlap proximate the support portion of the implant.

4. The implant system of claim 3 , wherein the sheath is made at least in part of a polymer material.

5. The implant system of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the needle device is curved.

6. The implant system of claim 1 , wherein the implant is made of a porous polymer mesh material.

7. The implant system of claim 1 , wherein the implant is an elongate implant.

8. The implant system of claim 7 , wherein the implant is an elongate mesh implant.

9. The implant system of claim 1 , wherein the snap engagement feature includes a groove portion.

10. The implant system of claim 1 , wherein the implant further includes a tensioning filament.

11. The implant system of claim 1 , wherein the movable member traverses at least partially within the interior lumen of the needle.

12. The implant system of claim 1 , wherein the movable member is biased to extend out a distance beyond a distal tip of the needle.

13. The implant system of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is a button mechanism.

14. An sling system for treating incontinence in a patient, comprising:

an elongate implant having at least one end dilator;

a needle device having an elongate needle having an interior lumen, and an elongate member having a distal end adapted to snappingly engage with the at least one end dilator; and

an actuator adapted to retract the elongate member within the elongate needle.

15. The sling system of claim 14 , further including a sheath having first and second portions adapted to overlap proximate the central support portion of the implant.

16. The sling system of claim 14 , further including a biasing elongate member.

17. The sling system of claim 16 , wherein the biasing elongate member is biased to extend out a distance beyond the distal end of the needle.

18. The sling system of claim 14 , wherein the distal end includes a groove portion.
