Abstract

Implementations and techniques for distilling popular parts of a web page are generally disclosed. In some examples the techniques include receiving, at a computing device, an indication of a clipboard operation on the web page, responsive to the received indication, obtaining information corresponding to data stored as content of the clipboard operation, storing the obtained information, determining a number of times the obtained information is stored, and setting a popularity level for the obtained information based, at least in part, on the determined number of times.

Claims (51)

1 . A method to distill a popular article from a web page, the method comprising:

receiving, by a server, an indication that a copy operation has occurred on the web page, wherein the copy operation comprises at least one computing device copying at least some content of an article among multiple articles from the web page;

obtaining, by the server, information corresponding to the copy operation, the information corresponding to the copy operation including a type of the copied content of the article;

determining, by the server, a count of a number of times the information corresponding to the copy operation is obtained;

setting, by the server, a popularity level for the copied content of the article based, at least in part, on the determined count of the number of times the information corresponding to the copy operation is obtained; and

responsive to a determination that the popularity level meets a predetermined threshold number, generating, by the server, a summary representation of the web page based on the copied content.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the type of the copied content of the article includes a link to the web page having the article, a portion of text of the article in the web page, an image related to the article, or full text of the article.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the information corresponding to the clipboard operation further includes a uniform resource locator (URL) of the article.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the web page is a social networking web page provided by a social networking service.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined threshold number is determined based, at least in part, on an audience size for the web page.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a request for the web page; and

providing the summary representation.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the providing the summary representation is based on user preferences associated with a social networking service providing the web page.

8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein receiving the request comprises receiving an indication of a search query.

9 . The method of claim 6 , wherein receiving the request comprises receiving a request to upload the web page.

10 . The method of claim 6 , wherein receiving the request comprises receiving an indication of sharing a link to the web page.

11 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the server, a second indication that a second copy operation has occurred on the web page, wherein the second copy operation comprises at least one computing device copying at least some content of the second article among the multiple articles from the web page;

obtaining, by the server, second information corresponding to the second copy operation, the second information corresponding to the second copy operation including a type of the copied content of the second article;

determining, by the server, a count of a number of times the second information corresponding to the second copy operation is obtained;

setting, by the server, a second popularity level for the copied content of the second article based, at least in part, on the determined count of the number of times the second information corresponding to the second copy operation is obtained; and

responsive to a determination that the second popularity level meets the predetermined threshold number, generating, by the server, second summary representation of the web page based on the copied content of the second article.

12 . The method of claim 11 ,

receiving a request for the web page;

providing the summary representation and the second summary representation; and

presenting the summary representation and the second summary representation in an order determined based on the popularity level and the second popularity level.

13 . A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored therein that, when executed by one or more processors, operatively enable a server to:

receive an indication that a copy operation has occurred on a web page, wherein the copy operation comprises at least one computing device copying at least some content of an article among multiple articles from the web page;

obtain information corresponding to the copy operation, the information corresponding to the copy operation including a type of the copied content of the article;

determine a count of a number of times the information corresponding to the copy operation is obtained;

set a popularity level for the copied content of the article based, at least in part, on the determined count of the number of times the information corresponding to the copy operation is obtained; and

responsive to a determination that the popularity level meets a predetermined threshold number, generate a summary representation of the web page based on the copied content.

14 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the stored instructions further enable the server to:

receive a request for the web page; and

provide the summary representation.

15 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the web page is a social networking web page provided by a social networking service.

16 . A server comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium communicatively coupled to the processor, the non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored therein that, when executed by the processor, cause the server to:

receive an indication that a copy operation has occurred on a web page, wherein the copy operation comprises at least one computing device copying at least some content of an article among multiple articles from the web page,

obtain information corresponding to the copy operation, the information corresponding to the copy operation including a type of the copied content of the article,

determine a count of a number of times the information corresponding to the copy operation is obtained,

set a popularity level for the copied content of the article based, at least in part, on the determined count of the number of times the information corresponding to the copy operation is obtained, and

responsive to a determination that the popularity level meets a predetermined threshold number, generate a summary representation of the web page based on the copied content.

17 . The server of claim 16 , wherein the stored instructions further enable the server to:

receive a request for the web page, and

provide the summary representation.

18 . The server of claim 17 , wherein the request comprises a search query.

19 . The server of claim 17 , wherein the request comprises a request to upload the web page.

20 . The server of claim 17 , wherein the request comprises an indication of sharing a link to the web page.
