Abstract

Systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable media can determine that a content item is being accessed by a computing device, the content item being associated with a set of streams that are each encoded at a different bit rate, each stream in the set of streams having been partitioned into at least a first set of segments and a second set of segments that span the entirety of the stream. A segment from a first set of segments of a first stream in the set of streams is provided to the computing device. One or more segments from a second set of segments of the first stream are provided to the computing device.

Claims (47)

1 . A computer-implemented method comprising:

determining, by a computing system, that a content item is being accessed by a computing device, the content item being associated with a set of streams that are each encoded at a different bit rate, each stream in the set of streams having been partitioned into at least a first set of segments and a second set of segments that span the entirety of the stream;

providing, by the computing system, a segment from a first set of segments of a first stream in the set of streams to the computing device; and

providing, by the computing system, one or more segments from a second set of segments of the first stream to the computing device.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of segments of the first stream each include at least one inter frame corresponding to the content item.

3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the second set of segments of the first stream each include at least one predictive frame corresponding to the content item.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , the method further comprising:

determining, by the computing system, that the computing device has requested a second stream in the set of streams, the second stream having a different bit rate than the first stream; and

providing, by the computing system, a segment from a first set of segments of the second stream to the computing device.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , the method further comprising:

determining, by the computing system, that the computing device has again requested the second stream; and

providing, by the computing system, one or more segments from a second set of segments of the second stream to the computing device.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , the method further comprising:

determining, by the computing system, that the computing device has requested a third stream in the set of streams, the third stream having a different bit rate than the second stream; and

providing, by the computing system, a segment from a first set of segments of the third stream to the computing device.

7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 6 , the method further comprising:

determining, by the computing system, that the computing device has again requested the third stream; and

providing, by the computing system, one or more segments from a second set of segments of the third stream to the computing device.

8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein each segment corresponds to some pre-defined portion of the first stream.

9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein each segment in the first set of segments that corresponds to a portion of the first stream has an analogue segment in the second set of segments that also corresponds to the same portion of the first stream.

10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein each stream in the set of streams can be streamed to playback the content item in its entirety.

11 . A system comprising:

at least one processor; and

a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to perform:

determining that a content item is being accessed by a computing device, the content item being associated with a set of streams that are each encoded at a different bit rate, each stream in the set of streams having been partitioned into at least a first set of segments and a second set of segments that span the entirety of the stream;

providing a segment from a first set of segments of a first stream in the set of streams to the computing device; and

providing one or more segments from a second set of segments of the first stream to the computing device.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the first set of segments of the first stream each include at least one inter frame corresponding to the content item.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the second set of segments of the first stream each include at least one predictive frame corresponding to the content item.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the instructions further cause the system to perform:

determining that the computing device has requested a second stream in the set of streams, the second stream having a different bit rate than the first stream; and

providing a segment from a first set of segments of the second stream to the computing device.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the instructions further cause the system to perform:

determining that the computing device has again requested the second stream; and

providing one or more segments from a second set of segments of the second stream to the computing device.

16 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including instructions that, when executed by at least one processor of a computing system, cause the computing system to perform a method comprising:

determining that a content item is being accessed by a computing device, the content item being associated with a set of streams that are each encoded at a different bit rate, each stream in the set of streams having been partitioned into at least a first set of segments and a second set of segments that span the entirety of the stream;

providing a segment from a first set of segments of a first stream in the set of streams to the computing device; and

providing one or more segments from a second set of segments of the first stream to the computing device.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the first set of segments of the first stream each include at least one inter frame corresponding to the content item.

18 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the second set of segments of the first stream each include at least one predictive frame corresponding to the content item.

19 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the instructions further cause the computing system to perform:

determining that the computing device has requested a second stream in the set of streams, the second stream having a different bit rate than the first stream; and

providing a segment from a first set of segments of the second stream to the computing device.

20 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the instructions further cause the computing system to perform:

determining that the computing device has again requested the second stream; and

providing one or more segments from a second set of segments of the second stream to the computing device.
