In-band peripheral authentication
This document describes techniques ( 300, 400 ) and apparatuses ( 100, 500, 600, 700 ) for in-band peripheral authentication. These techniques ( 300, 400 ) and apparatuses ( 100, 500, 600, 700 ) may communicate via a non-media channel allowing host device ( 102 ) to authenticate peripheral ( 106 ), enable an enhanced operational mode of the host device ( 102 ), and/or provide content configured for the peripheral ( 106 ) without the use of out-of-band signaling.
1. A method for authenticating a peripheral device, comprising:
detecting, at a host device, a peripheral device connected to a media interface of the host device, wherein the media interface includes a media channel and a non-media channel;
authenticating the peripheral device to the host device using the non-media channel; and
in response to authenticating the peripheral device to the host device, enabling a full operational mode between the host device and the media interface, wherein the full operational mode includes:
configuring the media interface to provide media content to the peripheral device via the media channel and to receive input from the peripheral device via the non-media channel; and
transmitting control signals to the peripheral device via the non-media channel based on input received from the peripheral device via the non-media channel.

The method of claim 1 , wherein authenticating the peripheral device to the host device comprises receiving, at the host device, an authentication response from the peripheral device via the non-media channel, and wherein configuring the media content provided to the peripheral device is based on the authentication response.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the authentication response includes an indication of a device type associated with the peripheral device.
4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:
causing second media content to be presented on the host device;
receiving an input from the peripheral device via the non-media channel; and
controlling presentation of the second media content on the host device using the input received from the peripheral device via the non-media channel.
5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
determining that the peripheral device has not been authenticated to the host device; and
in response to determining that the peripheral device has not been authenticated to the host device, configuring a limited operational mode associated with the host device and the media interface.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein configuring the limited operational mode comprises disabling one or more interactive features associated with the media content provided to the peripheral device.
7. A system for authenticating a peripheral device, the system comprising:
a hardware processor that is programmed to:
detect, at a host device, a peripheral device connected to a media interface of the host device, wherein the media interface includes a media channel and a non-media channel;
authenticate the peripheral device to the host device using the non-media channel; and
in response to authenticating the peripheral device to the host device, enable a full operational mode between the host device and the media interface, wherein the full operational mode includes causing the hardware processor to:
configure the media interface to provide media content to the peripheral device via the media channel and to receive input from the peripheral device via the non-media channel; and
transmit control signals to the peripheral device via the non-media channel based on input received from the peripheral device via the non-media channel.
8. The system of claim 7 , wherein authenticating the peripheral device to the host device comprises receiving, at the host device, an authentication response from the peripheral device via the non-media channel, and wherein configuring the media content provided to the peripheral device is based on the authentication response.
9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the authentication response includes an indication of a device type associated with the peripheral device.
10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the hardware processor is further programmed to:
cause second media content to be presented on the host device;
receive an input from the peripheral device via the non-media channel; and
control presentation of the second media content on the host device using the input received from the peripheral device via the non-media channel.
11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the hardware processor is further programmed to:
determine that the peripheral device has not been authenticated to the host device; and
in response to determining that the peripheral device has not been authenticated to the host device, configure a limited operational mode associated with the host device and the media interface.
12. The system of claim 11 , wherein configuring the limited operational mode comprises disabling one or more interactive features associated with the media content provided to the peripheral device.
13. A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method for authenticating a peripheral device, the method comprising:
detecting, at a host device, a peripheral device connected to a media interface of the host device, wherein the media interface includes a media channel and a non-media channel;
authenticating the peripheral device to the host device using the non-media channel; and
in response to authenticating the peripheral device to the host device, enabling a full operational mode between the host device and the media interface, wherein the full operational mode includes:
configuring the media interface to provide media content to the peripheral device via the media channel and to receive input from the peripheral device via the non-media channel; and
transmitting control signals to the peripheral device via the non-media channel based on input received from the peripheral device via the non-media channel.
14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein authenticating the peripheral device to the host device comprises receiving, at the host device, an authentication response from the peripheral device via the non-media channel, and wherein configuring the media content provided to the peripheral device is based on the authentication response.
15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the authentication response includes an indication of a device type associated with the peripheral device.
16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the method further comprises:
causing second media content to be presented on the host device;
receiving an input from the peripheral device via the non-media channel; and
controlling presentation of the second media content on the host device using the input received from the peripheral device via the non-media channel.
17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the method further comprises:
determining that the peripheral device has not been authenticated to the host device; and
in response to determining that the peripheral device has not been authenticated to the host device, configuring a limited operational mode associated with the host device and the media interface.
18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein configuring the limited operational mode comprises disabling one or more interactive features associated with the media content provided to the peripheral device.
