Abstract

A terrestrial receiver at a premises includes a plurality of antennas and a corresponding plurality of tuners. The terrestrial receiver receives terrestrial television signals via the plurality of antennas and the plurality of tuners and diversity combines a corresponding plurality of terrestrial television channels within the received terrestrial television signals, for example, based on control signals received from one or more customer premises equipment (CPE). The terrestrial receiver processes the diversity combined corresponding plurality of terrestrial television channels and communicates the processed and diversity combined corresponding plurality of terrestrial television channels to the one or more CPE. The diversity combined corresponding plurality of terrestrial television channels may be remodulated, and converted to corresponding analog signals prior to being communicated to the one or more CPE. The diversity combined corresponding plurality of terrestrial television channels may be demodulated and converted to intermediate frequency signals prior to being communicated to the one or more CPE.

Claims (32)

1. A method for communication, the method comprising:

in a receiver comprising a plurality of tuners:

receiving one or more signals spanning a frequency range corresponding to a plurality of television channels;

diversity combining the plurality of television channels;

remodulating the diversity combined plurality of television channels in accordance with one or more protocols used to generate the received one or more signals, the remodulating resulting in a remodulated signal that spans the frequency range and comprises the plurality of television channels, such that customer premises equipment can receive the remodulated signal and recover content from any desired one of the plurality of television channels in the remodulated signal; and

communicating the remodulated signal to the customer premises equipment.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein communicating the remodulated signal comprises converting the remodulated signal to an analog signal.

3. The method according to claim 1 , comprising:

demodulating the diversity combined plurality of television channels; and

converting the demodulated signal to an intermediate frequency signal prior to communicating to the customer premises equipment.

4. The method according to claim 1 , comprising

receiving one or more control signals from the customer premises equipment.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the diversity combining is based on the received one or more control signals.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the diversity combining utilizes coarse FFT processing.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the diversity combining performs channel stacking on a plurality of frequency bins.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises selecting the plurality of television channels from a digitized spectrum.

9. A system for communication, the system comprising:

a plurality of tuners operable to receive one or more signals spanning a frequency range corresponding to a plurality of television channels;

a diversity combiner operable to produce a diversity combined plurality of television channels from the plurality of television channels;

a modulator operable to modulate the diversity combined plurality of television channels in accordance with one or more protocols used to generate the received one or more signals, the modulator being operable to produce a remodulated signal that spans the frequency range and comprises the plurality of television channels, such that customer premises equipment can receive the remodulated signal and recover content from any desired one of the plurality of television channels in the remodulated signal; and

a transmitter operable to transmit the remodulated signal to the customer premises equipment.

10. The system according to claim 9 , wherein the transmitter comprises:

a digital to analog converter operable to convert the remodulated signal to a corresponding analog signal prior to transmitting the remodulated signal to the customer premises equipment.

11. The system according to claim 9 , wherein the system comprises:

a demodulator operable to demodulate the diversity combined plurality of television channels; and

a mixer operable to convert the demodulated diversity combined plurality of television channels to an intermediate frequency prior to transmitting to the customer premises equipment.

12. The system according to claim 9 , wherein a tuner of the plurality of tuners is operable to receive one or more control signals from the customer premises equipment.

13. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the production of the diversity combined plurality of television channels is based on the received one or more control signals.

14. The system according to claim 9 , wherein the diversity combiner is operable to use coarse FFT processing.

15. The system according to claim 9 , wherein each of the plurality of tuners comprises an analog-to-digital converter operable to digitize the frequency range to generate a digitized spectrum.

16. The system according to claim 15 , wherein each of the plurality of tuners comprises a channelizer operable to select the plurality of television channels from the digitized spectrum.

17. The system according to claim 9 , wherein the frequency range spans from 54 MHz to 889.75 MHz.
