Abstract

A method and system for updating physical location data associated with a VoIP endpoint device is implemented in a variety of embodiments. In one such embodiment, a VoIP endpoint device stores an identifier for a packet-communicating device which is subject to changing. The VoIP endpoint device has an interface for communication over the Internet via the packet-communicating device and uses a circuit-implemented method for prompting a VoIP user to update physical location data associated with the VoIP endpoint device. In response to a power state transition and a change in the stored identifier, the VoIP endpoint device facilitates an update to the physical location data associated with the VoIP service.

Claims (41)

1. A Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) device comprising:

processing circuitry configured and arranged to:

store identifiers corresponding to packet-based communication devices through which the VoIP device communicates; and

in response to power sensing circuitry detecting a power state transition for the VoIP device, output a determination whether a physical location update is appropriate by:

comparing a first stored identifier and a second stored identifier, corresponding to a packet-based communication device through which the VoIP device communicated before the detected power state transition and after the detected power state transition, respectively; and

output the determination based on the comparison of the first stored identifier and the second stored identifier.

2. The VoIP device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured and arranged to:

obtain an identifier corresponding to a subsequent packet-based communication device for VoIP communications after the detected power state transition in response to the comparison indicating that the first stored identifier and the second stored identifier match.

3. The VoIP device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured and arranged to:

output an indication that a physical location update is appropriate for the VoIP device in response to the comparison indicating that the first stored identifier and the second stored identifier do not match.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the identifiers for each of the packet-based communication devices are determined based on at least one of a media access control (MAC) address, an internet protocol (IP) address, and a wide area network (WAN) address.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the identifiers for each of the packet-based communication devices are determined based on a combination of a media access control (MAC) address, and a wide area network (WAN) address.

The device of claim 5 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured and arranged to determine that the VoIP device has changed physical location in response to the comparison indicating that the WAN address of the second stored identifier does not match the WAN address of the first stored identifier.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured and arranged to determine that the MAC address of the second stored identifier matches the MAC address of the first stored identifier.

The device of claim 5 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured and arranged to determine that the VoIP device has changed physical location in response to the comparison indicating that the MAC address of the second stored identifier does not match the MAC address of the first stored identifier.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured and arranged to determine that the WAN address of the second stored identifier matches the WAN address of the first stored identifier.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured and arranged to determine that the VoIP device has changed physical location in response to the comparison indicating a portion of the second stored identifier does not match a portion of the first stored identifier.

The device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured and arranged to send an indication of a time of a detected power state transition to a server and to generate a request to update physical location data in response to the server comparing the time of the detected power up event to a time of a most recent previous physical location update.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured and arranged to generate the request to update the physical location data by directing communications from the VoIP device to a physical location update interface provided by the server.

13. A Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) device comprising:

processing circuitry configured and arranged to:

host communications between a plurality of VoIP end devices and remotely situated service providers, each VoIP end device including:

processing circuitry configured and arranged to:

determine whether the respective VoIP device has changed physical location by comparing a first stored identifier and a second stored identifier, corresponding to a packet-based communication device through which the VoIP device communicated before a detected power state transition and after the detected power state transition, respectively;

redirect a particular VoIP end device in response to receipt of an alert indicating that the particular VoIP end device has changed physical location; and

signify to a particular VoIP end device that services provided by the service providers are current in response to a determination that the particular VoIP end device has not changed physical location.

14. The device of claim 13 , the processing circuitry configured and arranged to redirect outgoing calls received from the particular VoIP end device to an interactive voice response system, in response to the alert indicating that the particular VoIP end device has changed physical location.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the service providers include emergency service providers, the processing circuitry configured and arranged to redirect an emergency call received from the particular VoIP end device in response to the alert.

16. The device of claim 13 , the processing circuitry configured and arranged to redirect the particular VoIP end device to a webpage for entering updated physical location data, in response to the alert indicating that the particular VoIP end device has changed physical location.

17. The device of claim 13 , the processing circuitry configured and arranged to:

determine that the plurality of VoIP end devices are affected by a same VoIP system change; and

determine that physical location information for the plurality of VoIP end devices does not need to be updated, responsive to the VoIP system change.

18. The device of claim 13 , the processing circuitry further configured and arranged to:

receive updated physical location information for the particular VoIP end device;

provide the updated physical location information for the particular VoIP end device to the remotely situated service providers; and

terminate redirecting the VoIP end device in response to receipt of the updated physical location information.

19. The device of claim 13 , the processing circuitry further configured and arranged to:

after a threshold period of time and in response to a determination that the particular VoIP end device has provided updated physical location data, terminate redirecting the particular VoIP end device.

The device of claim 13 , wherein the service providers include emergency service providers, the processing circuitry configured and arranged to provide to the emergency service providers updated location information for the particular VoIP end device in response to receipt of an emergency call from the particular VoIP end device.

21. The device of claim 13 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured and arranged to receive an indication of a time of the detected power state transition from the particular VoIP end device, and compare the time of a detected power up event to a location-update date for the particular VoIP end device.

22. The device of claim 21 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured and arranged to redirect the particular VoIP end device based on the comparison of the time of the detected power up event to the location-update date.
