Abstract

This disclosure provides connectors for smart windows. A smart window may incorporate an optically switchable pane. In one aspect, a window unit includes an insulated glass unit including an optically switchable pane. A wire assembly may be attached to the edge of the insulated glass unit and may include wires in electrical communication with electrodes of the optically switchable pane. A floating connector may be attached to a distal end of the wire assembly. The floating connector may include a flange and a nose, with two holes in the flange for affixing the floating connector to a first frame. The nose may include a terminal face that present two exposed contacts of opposite polarity. Pre-wired spacers improve fabrication efficiency and seal integrity of insulated glass units. Electrical connection systems include those embedded in the secondary seal of the insulated glass unit.

Claims (32)

1. An insulated glass unit comprising:

two panes including an optically switchable pane comprising an optical device;

a spacer between and sealed to the two panes;

a secondary sealing area outside of the spacer and between the two panes; and

two or more redundant first connectors configured in the secondary sealing area, each of the two or more redundant first connectors in electrical communication with the optical device.

2. The insulated glass unit of claim 1 , wherein each of the two or more redundant first connectors comprises a ribbon cable in the secondary sealing area of the insulated glass unit and configured to supply electricity to the optical device.

3. The insulated glass unit of claim 2 , wherein each of the two or more redundant first connectors comprise one or more pin sockets or pin connectors in electrical communication with the ribbon cable.

4. The insulated glass unit of claim 2 , wherein a controller, configured to control the optical device, is also in the secondary sealing area.

5. The insulated glass unit of claim 1 , the insulated glass unit further comprises a pocket for housing a controller configured to control the optical device, the pocket configured with wiring for electrically connecting the controller with the optical device.

6. The insulated glass unit of claim 5 , wherein the pocket is configured such that when the controller is housed within the pocket, the controller lies within the perimeter of the insulated glass unit.

7. The insulated glass unit of claim 6 , wherein the controller's thickness is not greater than the thickness of the insulated glass unit.

8. The insulated glass unit of claim 2 , wherein each of the two or more redundant first connectors is configured to mate with a controller configured to control the optical device.

9. The insulated glass unit of claim 6 , wherein the controller is external to the secondary sealing area and configured to mate with one of the two or more redundant first connectors via a pigtail connector.

10. The insulated glass unit of claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured so that when mated to one of the two or more redundant first connectors, the controller is adjacent the secondary sealing area.

11. The insulated glass unit of claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to electrically connect to one of the two or more redundant first connectors via a second ribbon cable.

12. The insulated glass unit of claim 10 , wherein the controller's thickness is not greater than the thickness of the insulated glass unit.

13. The insulated glass unit of claim 1 , wherein the two or more redundant first connectors are on different sides of the insulated glass unit.

14. The insulated glass unit of claim 1 , wherein the insulated glass unit is rectangular and wherein the two or more redundant first connectors comprise at least four connectors, one on each side of the insulated glass unit and in the secondary sealing area.

15. The insulated glass unit of claim 1 , wherein each of the two or more redundant first connectors are in electrical communication with the optical device via bus bars.

16. The insulated glass unit of claim 1 , wherein each of the two or more redundant first connectors are configured to detachably connect to a wire assembly in electrical connection with a controller configured to control the optical device.

17. The insulated glass unit of claim 16 , wherein each of the two or more first redundant connectors are configured to connect to a pigtail connector of the wire assembly.

18. The insulated glass unit of claim 1 , wherein:

each of the two or more redundant first connectors is configured to detachably connect to a wire assembly in electrical connection with a controller configured to control the optical device; and

each of the two or more redundant first connectors comprising exposed contacts electrically coupled to leads extending from the optically switchable pane, wherein the exposed contacts are configured for mechanical engagement with a second connector of the wire assembly.

19. The insulated glass unit of claim 18 , wherein:

each of the two or more redundant first connectors further comprises a first ferromagnetic element;

the second connector further comprises a second ferromagnetic element; and

at least one of the first and second ferromagnetic elements is magnetized such that when the first and second connectors magnetically engage, the exposed contacts mechanically engage the second connector of the wire assembly.

The insulated glass unit of claim 1 , wherein each of the two or more redundant first connectors are configured to detachably connect to a distal end of the wire assembly in electrical connection with a controller configured to control the optical device, wherein the distal end of the wire assembly includes one or both of a memory device and an integrated circuit device.

21. The insulated glass unit of claim 20 , wherein the memory device and/or integrated circuit device stores information for identifying and/or controlling the optically switchable pane.

22. The insulated glass unit of claim 21 , wherein the information comprises current and voltage operating instructions for transitioning the optically switchable pane between a first optical state and a second optical state.

23. The insulated glass unit of claim 20 , wherein the distal end of the wire assembly is in the form of a pigtail connector.
