Abstract

The invention provides a method for creating a curvilinear void created in a bony structure. The method includes inserting a distal end of a reamer device through a cannula and into a curvilinear void created in a bony structure, the reamer device having a flexible reamer shaft assembly which includes (i) a pivotable reaming element at a distal end thereof, and (ii) a mechanism for pivoting adjustably the reaming element. The method also includes deploying the reaming element within the curvilinear void and manipulating the reaming element to enlarge the curvilinear void.

Claims (24)

1. An apparatus for forming a curvilinear void in bony structure comprising:

a handle; and

a flexible drill shaft assembly having a longitudinal axis and extending from a distal end of the handle, comprising:

a cutting tip located at a distal end of the flexible drill shaft assembly;

a flexible rotatable drive shaft coupled to the tip; and

a flexible, moveable and non-rotatable housing;

an inner cable extending through the flexible rotatable drive shaft and the cutting tip,

wherein the inner cable is used to tilt or open the cutting tip from a neutral position aligned with the longitudinal axis of the shaft to a deployed position at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the shaft, and

wherein the cutting tip is pivotable with respect to the flexible rotatable drive shaft about a pivot pin coupled to a yoke mounted at a distal end of the flexible rotatable drive shaft.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cutting tip is adapted to form the curvilinear void by simultaneous rotation and curvilinear translation of the cutting tip.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the flexible drill shaft assembly is adapted to form a curvature at a distal end thereof.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 further comprising a lever and cam sub assembly for varying a force used to apply the curvature.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the lever has a first position at which the force is less than at a second position of the lever.

6. An apparatus for enlarging a curvilinear void created in a bony structure comprising:

a handle; and

a flexible drill shaft assembly having a longitudinal axis and extending from a distal end of the handle, comprising:

a pivotable reaming blade located at a distal end of the flexible drill shaft assembly;

a flexible rotatable drive shaft coupled to the tip; and

a flexible, moveable and non-rotatable housing,

an inner cable extending through the flexible rotatable drive shaft and the cutting tip,

wherein the inner cable is used to tilt or open the cutting tip from a neutral position aligned with the longitudinal axis of the shaft to a deployed position at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the shaft, and

wherein the cutting tip is pivotable with respect to the flexible rotatable drive shaft about a pivot pin coupled to a yoke mounted at a distal end of the flexible rotatable drive shaft.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the reaming blade is adapted to pivot from a first position to a second position.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the reaming blade is adapted to form the curvilinear void by simultaneous rotation and curvilinear translation of the reaming blade.
