Abstract

Embodiments of the invention relate to virtual link aggregation. One embodiment includes forming one or more virtual links using physical links connecting a first networking element, a second networking element and a third networking element. A first trigger status indication is used for blocking network traffic for avoiding traffic loops occurring over the one or more virtual links.

Claims (27)

1. A method comprising:

at a first networking element:

receiving a first packet from a host connected to the first networking element;

forwarding the first packet to one of a second networking element and a third networking element; and

receiving a duplicate of a second packet from a fourth networking element in response to a failure to establish a virtual link aggregation group between the second networking element and the third networking element, wherein the second packet originates from an additional host connected to the fourth networking element.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first networking element is connected to the second networking element and the third networking element via a first link and a second link, respectively, and the second networking element is connected to the third networking element via a third link.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first networking element comprises an access switch, the second networking element comprises a first aggregator switch, the third networking element comprises a second aggregator switch, and the fourth networking element comprises an additional access switch.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the failure to establish the virtual link aggregation group occurs when the first aggregator switch and the second aggregator switch are not cooperating with each other.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first link and the second link comprise a combination of physical links, and the third link comprises an inter-switch link.

6. A system comprising a computer processor, a computer-readable hardware storage device, and program code embodied with the computer-readable hardware storage medium for execution by the computer processor to implement a method comprising:

at a first networking element:

receiving a first packet from a host connected to the first networking element;

forwarding the first packet to one of a second networking element and a third networking element; and

receiving a duplicate of a second packet from a fourth networking element in response to a failure to establish a virtual link aggregation group between the second networking element and the third networking element, wherein the second packet originates from an additional host connected to the fourth networking element.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first networking element is connected to the second networking element and the third networking element via a first link and a second link, respectively, and the second networking element is connected to the third networking element via a third link.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first networking element comprises an access switch, the second networking element comprises a first aggregator switch, the third networking element comprises a second aggregator switch, and the fourth networking element comprises an additional access switch.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the failure to establish the virtual link aggregation group occurs when the first aggregator switch and the second aggregator switch are not cooperating with each other.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first link and the second link comprise a combination of physical links, and the third link comprises an inter-switch link.

11. A computer program product comprising a computer-readable hardware storage device having program code embodied therewith, the program code being executable by a computer to implement a method comprising:

at a first networking element:

receiving a first packet from a host connected to the first networking element;

forwarding the first packet to one of a second networking element and a third networking element; and

receiving a duplicate of a second packet from a fourth networking element in response to a failure to establish a virtual link aggregation group between the second networking element and the third networking element, wherein the second packet originates from an additional host connected to the fourth networking element.

12. The computer program product of claim 11 , wherein the first networking element is connected to the second networking element and the third networking element via a first link and a second link, respectively, and the second networking element is connected to the third networking element via a third link.

13. The computer program product of claim 12 , wherein the first networking element comprises an access switch, the second networking element comprises a first aggregator switch, the third networking element comprises a second aggregator switch, and the fourth networking element comprises an additional access switch.

14. The computer program product of claim 13 , wherein the failure to establish the virtual link aggregation group occurs when the first aggregator switch and the second aggregator switch are not cooperating with each other.

15. The computer program product of claim 13 , wherein the first link and the second link comprise a combination of physical links, and the third link comprises an inter-switch link.
