Abstract

A method of forming an implant to be implanted into living bone is disclosed. The method includes the act of roughening at least a portion of the implant surface to produce a microscale roughened surface. The method further includes forming a nanoscale roughened surface on the microscale roughened surface. The method further includes the act of depositing discrete nanoparticles on the nanoscale roughened surface though a one-step process of exposing the roughened surface to a solution including the nanoparticles. The nanoparticles have a material having a property that promotes osseointegration.

Claims (28)

1. A dental implant, comprising:

a head portion;

a lowermost end opposing the head portion; and

a threaded bottom portion for engaging bone between the head portion and the lowermost end, the threaded bottom portion including:

a microscale roughened surface;

a first nanotopography on the microscale roughened surface; and

a second nanotopography in contact with a first portion of the microscale roughened surface and a first portion of the first nanotopography.

2. The dental implant of claim 1 , wherein the second nanotopography is discrete nanoparticles.

3. The dental implant of claim 2 , wherein the discrete nanoparticles are hydroxyapatite nanocrystals.

4. The dental implant of claim 2 , wherein the discrete nanoparticles are on the order of 10 nanometers to 150 nanometers.

5. The dental implant of claim 2 , wherein a second portion of the microscale roughened surface and a second portion of the first nanotopography is exposed between at least some of the discrete nanoparticles such that the second portion of the microscale roughened surface and the second portion of the first nanotopography are for contacting bone.

6. The dental implant of claim 1 , wherein the microscale roughened surface include microscale irregularities having peak-to-valley heights no greater than 20 microns.

7. The dental implant of claim 6 , wherein the microscale irregularities have a peak-to-valley height of 1 micron to 10 microns.

8. The dental implant of claim 1 , wherein the first nanotopography is permanent nanostructures.

9. A dental implant, comprising:

a head portion;

a lowermost end opposing the head portion; and

a threaded bottom portion for engaging bone between the head portion and the lowermost end, the threaded bottom portion including:

a microscale roughened surface;

a nanoscale roughened surface formed on the microscale roughened surface; and

a plurality of discrete nanoparticles deposited on and in contact with a first portion of the microscale roughened surface and a first portion of the nanoscale roughened surface.

10. The dental implant of claim 9 , wherein the microscale roughened surface includes microscale irregularities having peak-to-valley heights of no greater than 20 microns.

11. The dental implant of claim 9 , wherein the nanoscale roughened surface includes permanent nanostructures.

12. The dental implant of claim 11 , wherein a material of the permanent nanostructures is the same as a material of the dental implant.

13. The dental implant of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of discrete nanoparticles is a material that is different from the material of the dental implant.

14. The dental implant of claim 11 , wherein a first portion of discrete nanoparticles are deposited on the permanent nanostructures.

15. The dental implant of claim 14 , wherein a second portion of the discrete nanoparticles are deposited on the nanoscale roughened surface between the permanent nanostructures.

16. The dental implant of claim 9 , wherein a second portion of the microscale roughened surface and a second portion of the nanoscale roughened surface is exposed between at least some of the discrete nanoparticles such that the second portion of the microscale roughened surface and the second portion of the nanoscale roughened surface are for contacting bone.
