Abstract

A photovoltaic module remote-access module switch and real-time temperature monitoring system is provided. In one embodiment, a remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit capable of communicating with a remote receiver and having a pair of output electrical leads, and a pair of input electrical leads connected to a pair of electrical power leads of a solar photovoltaic module is provided, and which further includes a series switch, a module voltage measurement circuit, a module current measurement circuit, a temperature sensor, and a communication circuit.

Claims (20)

1. A remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit capable of communicating with a remote receiver and having a pair of output electrical leads, and a pair of input electrical leads connected to a pair of electrical power leads of a solar photovoltaic module, comprising:

a. A series switch placed between said pair of output electrical leads and said pair of input electrical leads, said series switch remotely controllable to be in one of two modes: (i) turned on to allow power delivery from said pair of electrical power leads of said solar photovoltaic module to an electrical load and, (ii) turned off to place said solar photovoltaic module in the open-circuit mode with an open-circuit module voltage across said pair of electrical power leads

b. A module voltage measurement circuit for periodic real-time measurements of the module voltage as measured across one of said pair of input electrical leads and said pair of output electrical leads during the power generation period by said solar photovoltaic module between its daily wakeup time and sleep time, including periodic real-time measurements of: (i) said open-circuit module voltage when said series switch is turned off and, (ii) said module voltage when said series switch is turned on

c. A module current measurement circuit for periodic real-time measurements of the module current flowing through said pair of electrical power leads during said power generation period, including periodic real-time measurements of said module current when said series switch is turned on

d. A temperature sensor for periodic real-time measurements of the circuit temperature of said remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit, said circuit temperature being the same as the wake-up ambient temperature at the daily wake-up time of said solar photovoltaic module and said remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit, and said circuit temperature being the same as the sleep ambient temperature at the daily sleep time of said solar photovoltaic module and said remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit

e. A communication circuit for sending an output signal of the remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit to said remote receiver.

The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 1 , wherein a combination of said real-time measurements of said module voltage, said module open-circuit voltage, and said module current, as well as measurements of said wake-up ambient temperature is used to calculate and provide real-time effective temperature of said solar photovoltaic module during said power generation period based on a first module temperature extraction algorithm.

The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 1 , wherein a combination of said real-time measurements of said module voltage, said module open-circuit voltage, and said module current, as well as measurements of said wake-up ambient temperature is used to calculate and provide real-time effective temperature of said solar photovoltaic module during said power generation period based on a second module temperature extraction algorithm.

The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 2 , wherein said first module temperature extraction algorithm uses a formula to calculate said real-time effective temperature of said solar photovoltaic module at any operating time, as follows: (i) subtract said module open-circuit voltage at said daily wake-up time from said module open-circuit voltage at said operating time, (ii) divide the resulting voltage value by a pre-specified temperature coefficient constant of said solar photovoltaic module, and (iii) add the resulting temperature value to said wake-up ambient temperature to provide said real-time effective temperature of said solar photovoltaic module at said operating time during said power generation period.

The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 3 , wherein said second module temperature extraction algorithm uses a formula to calculate said real-time effective temperature of said solar photovoltaic module at any operating time, as follows: (i) calculate the natural logarithm of the resulting ratio of said module current at said daily wake-up time to said module current at said operating time, (ii) multiply the resulting number from the prior step by a pre-determined fixed multiplier constant, (iii) add 1 to the resulting number from the prior step, (iv) multiply the resulting number from the prior step by the ratio of said module open-circuit voltage at said operating time to said module open-circuit voltage at said daily wake-up time, (v) raise the resulting number from the prior step to the power of a pre-determined exponent constant, (vi) divide said wake-up ambient temperature by the resulting number from the prior step to provide said real-time effective temperature of said solar photovoltaic module at said operating time during said power generation period.

6. The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 2 , wherein said real-time effective temperature of said solar photovoltaic module is communicated to the remote receiver.

7. The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 3 , wherein said real-time effective temperature of said solar photovoltaic module is communicated to the remote receiver.

8. The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 1 , wherein said communication circuit is a wireless communication circuit.

9. The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 1 , wherein said communication circuit is a power-line communication circuit.

The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 1 , further comprising a parallel switch connected across said pair of output electrical leads, said parallel switch remotely controllable to be in one of two modes: (i) turned off to allow power delivery from said pair of electrical power leads of said solar photovoltaic module to an electrical load and,

(ii) turned on to short said output electrical leads.

11. The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 1 , wherein said remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit is positioned within an electrical junction box attached to said solar photovoltaic module.

12. The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 1 , wherein said remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit is positioned within a structural laminate of said solar photovoltaic module.

13. The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 1 , wherein said temperature sensor is part of said communication circuit.

14. The remote-access module switch and monitoring circuit of claim 10 , wherein said series switch and the parallel switch are field-effect transistors.
