METHODS FOR MODIFYING ZETA POTENTIAL OF ELECTROPHORETIC PARTICLES
The present invention is directed to methods for modifying the zeta potential of an electrophoretic pigment particle. The composite pigment particle comprises at least a core pigment particle and a shell coated over the core pigment particle, wherein the shell is formed from a monomer and a co-monomer. The zeta potential of the composite pigment particle can be adjusted by choosing suitable co-monomers described herein.
1 . A method for tuning the charge level of a composite pigment particle, comprising providing a pigment particle;
(ii) providing a composition comprising a monomer;
(iii) selecting a co-monomer from the group consisting of fluorinated acrylate, fluorinated methacrylate and co-monomers comprising an amino functionality;
(iv) adding the co-monomer to the composition; and
(v) forming a co-polymer shell comprising the monomer and the co-monomer around the pigment particle using the composition, thereby creating a composite pigment particle.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the monomer is an acrylate, a methacrylate or a styrene with a hydrocarbon side chain.
3 . The particle of claim 1 , wherein the co-monomer is a fluorinated acrylate or a fluorinated methacrylate.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the monomer is styrene, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, n-butyl methacrylate, t-butyl acrylate, t-butyl methacrylate, vinyl pyridine, n-vinyl pyrrolidone, 2-hydoxyethyl acrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate or dimethyiaminoethyl methacrylate.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the co-monomer is 2-perfluorobutylethyl acrylate, 2,2,2 trifiuoroethyl methacrylate, 2,2,3,3 tetrafluoropropyl methacrylate, 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropyl acrylate, 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropyl methacrylate, 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropyl acrylate, 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl acrylate, 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluorobutyl methacrylate, 2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutyl methacrylate.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the co-monomer is vinylbenzyl-aminoethylamino-propyl-trimethoxysilane, 2-acrylamino-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate or N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-methacrylamide.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the co-polymer shell is formed by dispersion polymerization.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the co-monomer comprises a functional group selected from the group consisting of —NHR, —NR 2 , —NH- and —NH 2 , wherein R is an alkyl group comprising 4 or fewer carbon atoms.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the monomer and the co-monomer are methylmethacrylate and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate respectively, methylmethacrylate and 2-perfluorobutylethyl acrylate respectively or methylmethacrylate and 2,2,2 trifluoroethyl methacrylate respectively.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the molar percentage of the co-monomer to the total of the monomer and the co-monomer is between 1 to 10%.
11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the molar percentage of the co-monomer to the total of the monomer and the co-monomer is between 5 to 20%.
12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pigment particle has a negative charge polarity and the composite pigment particle has a positive charge polarity.
13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pigment particle has a positive charge polarity and the composite pigment particle has a negative charge polarity.
14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pigment particle has a neutral charge polarity and the composite pigment particle has a positive charge polarity.
15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pigment particle has a neutral charge polarity and the composite pigment particle has a negative charge polarity.
16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pigment particle comprises TiO 2 , BaSO 4 , ZnO, metal oxides, manganese ferrite black spinel, copper chromite black spinel, carbon black, or zinc sulfide.
17 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
(vi) providing steric stabilizer molecules that bond to the co-polymer shell.
18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the steric stabilizer molecules comprise polyacrylate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, polysiloxane or a mixture thereof.
