Abstract

The tissue retrieval system deploys a tissue bag at the surgical site. The bag is supported by the system as tissue is placed within the bag and is closed to isolate the collected tissue and allow the bag and collected tissue to be removed from the body. The bag can be reopened and re-closed as desired through use of a guide bead and cord. The bead also facilitates removal of the collected tissue.

Claims (45)

1. A tissue retrieval apparatus comprising:

an introducer tube having a longitudinally extending lumen;

an actuator movable through the lumen of the introducer tube, the actuator having a proximal end and a distal end;

a first support arm extending from the distal end of the actuator;

a second support arm extending from the distal end of the actuator;

a third support arm;

a tissue bag having an open end and a closed end, the open end of the tissue bag releasably coupled to the first and second support arms; and

a cord attached along a periphery of the open end of the tissue bag and to the actuator,

wherein the third support arm extends from a first end at the distal end of the actuator to a second end adjacent the closed end of the tissue bag, and wherein the third support arm is positioned between the first and second support arms.

2. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the tissue bag is movable from a stored position rolled within the introducer tube to a deployed position, and wherein in the deployed position, the first and second support arms suspend and hold the tissue bag open at the open end.

3. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the third support arm is releasably coupled to the tissue bag adjacent the closed end of the tissue bag and unrolls the tissue bag when the tissue bag is moved from the stored position to the deployed position.

4. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the third support arm is movable in a direction traverse to the first and second support arms.

5. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the third support arm comprises a spring arm.

6. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the third support arm is substantially shorter than the first and second support arms.

7. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a guide bead frictionally coupled to the cord.

8. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the first support arm, second support arm, and third support arm all extend through the guide bead.

9. A tissue retrieval apparatus comprising:

an introducer tube having a longitudinally extending lumen;

an actuator movable through the lumen of the introducer tube, the actuator having a proximal end and a distal end;

a first support arm extending from the distal end of the actuator;

a second support arm extending from the distal end of the actuator;

a third support arm extending from the distal end of the actuator; wherein the third support arm is positioned between the first and second support arms;

a tissue bag having an open end and a closed end, the open end of the tissue bag releasably coupled to the first and second support arms;

a cord attached along a periphery of the open end of the tissue bag and to the actuator; and

a guide bead frictionally coupled to the cord,

wherein the first support arm, second support arm, and third support arm all extend through the guide bead.

10. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the tissue bag is movable from a stored position rolled within the introducer tube to a deployed position, and wherein in the deployed position, the first and second support arms suspend and hold the tissue bag open at the open end.

11. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the third support arm is releasably coupled to the tissue bag adjacent the closed end of the tissue bag and unrolls the tissue bag when the tissue bag is moved from the stored position to the deployed position.

12. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the third support arm is movable in a direction traverse to the first and second support arms.

13. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the third support arm comprises a spring arm.

14. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the third support arm is substantially shorter than the first and second support arms.

15. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the guide bead comprises at least one slot extending therethrough through which at least one of the first support arm, the second support arm, and the third support arm extends.

16. A tissue retrieval apparatus comprising:

an introducer tube having a longitudinally extending lumen;

an actuator movable through the lumen of the introducer tube, the actuator having a proximal end and a distal end;

a first support arm extending from the distal end of the actuator;

a second support arm extending from the distal end of the actuator;

a third support arm;

a tissue bag having an open end and a closed end, the open end of the tissue bag releasably coupled to the first and second support arms; and

a cord attached along a periphery of the open end of the tissue bag and to the actuator,

wherein the third support arm extends from a first end at the distal end of the actuator to a second end adjacent the closed end of the tissue bag, and wherein the third support arm is substantially shorter than the first and second support arms.

17. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the third support arm comprises a spring arm.

18. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the third support arm is movable in a direction traverse to the first and second support arms.

19. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the tissue bag is movable from a stored position rolled within the introducer tube to a deployed position, and wherein in the deployed position, the first and second support arms suspend and hold the tissue bag open at the open end.

20. The tissue retrieval apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the third support arm is releasably coupled to the tissue bag adjacent the closed end of the tissue bag and unrolls the tissue bag when the tissue bag is moved from the stored position to the deployed position.
