Abstract

An embodiment of the present disclosure is directed to a sacrificial coating composition for an image transfer member in an aqueous ink imaging system. The coating composition is made from ingredients including: a latex having polymer particles dispersed in a continuous liquid phase; at least one hygroscopic material; at least one oil-in-water emulsion; and at least one surfactant.

Claims (26)

1. An indirect printing process comprising:

providing an ink composition to an inkjet printing apparatus comprising an intermediate transfer member;

forming a sacrificial coating onto the intermediate transfer member, the sacrificial coating made from ingredients comprising:

a latex comprising polymer particles dispersed in a continuous liquid phase;

at least one hygroscopic material;

at least one oil-in-water emulsion; and

at least one surfactant;

ejecting droplets of ink in an imagewise pattern onto the sacrificial coating;

at least partially drying the ink to form a substantially dry ink pattern on the intermediate transfer member; and

transferring both the substantially dry ink pattern and the sacrificial coating from the intermediate transfer member to a final substrate.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein forming the sacrificial coating comprises applying a liquid coating material onto the intermediate transfer member; and drying the coating material.

3. The process of claim 1 , wherein the substantially dry ink pattern comprises less than 5% water or solvent, based on the total weight of the dry ink.

4. The process of claim 1 , wherein the polymer particles comprise one or more repeating polymeric units selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid units, acrylate units, methacrylic acid units, methacrylate units, diene units, aliphatic nitrile units, vinyl ether units, vinyl ester units, vinyl ketone units, vinylidene halide units, vinyl substituted heterocyclic amine units, acrylamide units, methacrylamide units, vinyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon units, vinyl halide units and alkene units.

5. The process of claim 1 , wherein latex comprises styrene/n-butyl acrylate/methacrylic acid terpolymer.

6. The process of claim 1 , wherein the latex comprises one or more acrylic resins made from at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, methacrylic acid and acrylic acid.

7. The process of claim 1 , wherein the polymers in the latex have a glass transition temperature of ranging from about −45° C. to about 100° C., a weight average molecular weight ranging from about 3000 to about 300,000, and a particle size ranging from 50 nm to 300 nm.

8. The process of claim 1 , wherein the latex has a viscosity of about 3 cps to about 800 cps at 25° C., a pH ranging from about 1.5 to about 10, and a solid content ranging from 5% to about 60%.

9. The process of claim 1 , wherein the polymer particles comprise polyvinyl acetate copolymer.

10. The process of claim 1 , wherein the at least one hygroscopic material is selected from the group consisting of glycerol, sorbitol, glycols, vinyl alcohols, xylitol, maltitol, polymeric polyols, glyceryl triacetate, glycouril, ionic liquids and mixtures thereof.

11. The process of claim 1 , wherein the at least one oil-in-water emulsion comprises an oil selected from the group consisting of a silicone oil, a perfluoroether oil, a hydrocarbon oil and mixtures thereof.

12. The process of claim 11 , wherein the oil is silicone oil and a viscosity of the silicone oil is less than 1000 centipoises.

13. The process of claim 1 , wherein the at least one oil-in-water emulsion comprises a mineral oil selected from the group consisting of paraffinic oils, naphthenic oils, aromatic oils and mixtures thereof.

14. The process of claim 1 , wherein the at least one surfactant is a nonionic surfactant having a hydrophile lipophile balance (HLB) value ranging from about 4 to about 15.

15. The process of claim 1 , wherein the at least one surfactant comprises a mixture of a first surfactant and a second surfactant, the first surfactant having a hydrophile lipophile balance (“HLB”) value ranging from about 8 to about 15 and the second surfactant having an HLB value ranging from about 4 to about 10, the HLB value for the first surfactant being higher that the HLB value for the second surfactant.

16. The process of claim 1 , wherein the surfactant is a secondary alcohol ethoxylate.

17. The process of claim 1 , wherein the surfactant is a branched secondary alcohol ethoxylate with 6 to 12 moles of ethylene oxide (EO).
