Abstract

A portable device includes solid-state memory, an Ethernet and/or wireless network connection, and an HDMI. The portable device receives content guide data from a first server and displays a content guide on a display. In response to a user's selection of a content item, the portable device requests the content item over the Internet from a second server. The portable device receives the content item, stores the content item in solid-state memory, generates display signals that represent the content item, and sends the display signals to a display. The second server may match the content item with relevant advertisements based on keywords associated with the content item and the advertisements. The second server may send selected advertisement URLs to the portable device. Using the URLs, the portable device may obtain the advertisements over the Internet and cause the display to display the advertisements in conjunction with the content item.

Claims (46)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, with receiver circuitry at a device, a set of timepoints relating to a content data, the content data received by the device;

receiving, at the device, one or more user interface commands from the server via the Internet;

in response to receiving the one or more user interface commands, generating user interface display signals that represent a user interface using at least the one or more user interface commands;

sending the user interface display signals from the device to a display device;

causing, by processing circuitry of the device, presentation of the content data;

notifying a server, by the processing circuitry of the device, over the Internet, that a timepoint among the set of timepoints has been reached in the content data;

in response to the device notifying the server that the timepoint has been reached, receiving, by the processing circuitry of the device, from the server, via the Internet, an identification of one or more particular additional content;

in response to receiving the identification of the one or more particular additional content from the server, interrupting, by the processing circuitry of the device, presentation of the content data and causing presentation of the one or more particular additional content; and

after causing presentation of the one or more particular additional content, resuming, by the processing circuitry of the device, presentation of the content data.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content data is at least one of a movie, a television show, or music.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more particular additional content includes one or more particular advertisements, and wherein the server selects the one or more particular advertisements associated with a highest bid amount from an advertiser.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein each identification of each additional content among the one or more particular additional content includes a URL of the additional content.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the device causes presentation of the one or more particular additional content by retrieving the one or more particular additional content using the URL of each additional content among the one or more particular additional content.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is communicatively connected to a display device via an HDMI connection.

7. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing one or more sequences of instructions, wherein execution of the one or more sequences of instructions by one or more processors causes the one or more processors to perform:

receiving, at a device, a set of timepoints relating to a content data, the content data received by the device;

receiving, at the device, one or more user interface commands from the server via the Internet;

in response to receiving the one or more user interface commands, generating user interface display signals that represent a user interface using at least the one or more user interface commands;

sending the user interface display signals from the device to a display device;

causing, by the device, presentation of the content data;

notifying a server, by the device, over the Internet, that a timepoint among the set of timepoints has been reached in the content data;

in response to the device notifying the server that the timepoint has been reached, receiving, by the device, from the server, via the Internet, an identification of one or more particular additional content;

in response to receiving the identification of the one or more particular additional content from the server, interrupting, by the device, presentation of the content data and causing presentation of the one or more particular additional content; and

after causing presentation of the one or more particular additional content, resuming, by the device, presentation of the content data.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the content data is at least one of a movie, a television show, or music.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the one or more particular additional content includes one or more particular advertisements, and wherein the server selects the one or more particular advertisements associated with a highest bid amount from an advertiser.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein each identification of each additional content among the one or more particular additional content includes a URL of the additional content.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the device causes presentation of the one or more particular additional content by retrieving the one or more particular additional content using the URL of each additional content among the one or more particular additional content.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the device is communicatively connected to a display device via an HDMI connection.

13. An apparatus, comprising:

receiver circuitry, implemented at least partially in hardware at a device, that:

receives, at the device, a set of timepoints relating to a content data, the content data received by the device; and

receives, at the device, one or more user interface commands from the server via the Internet; and

processing circuitry, implemented at least partially in hardware at the device, that:

sends display signals that represent the content data to a display device;

in response to receiving the one or more user interface commands, generates user interface display signals that represent a user interface using at least the one or more user interface commands;

sends the user interface display signals from the device to the display device;

notifies a server, over the Internet, that a timepoint among the set of timepoints has been reached in the content data;

in response to notifying the server that the timepoint has been reached, receives, from the server, via the Internet, an identification of one or more particular additional content;

in response to receiving the identification of the one or more particular additional content from the server, interrupts presentation of the content data and causes presentation of the one or more particular additional content; and

after causing presentation of the one or more particular additional content, resumes presentation of the content data.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the content data is at least one of a movie, a television show, or music.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the one or more particular additional content includes one or more particular advertisements, and wherein the server selects the one or more particular advertisements associated with a highest bid amount from an advertiser.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein each identification of each additional content among the one or more particular additional content includes a URL of the additional content, and wherein the processing circuitry causes presentation of the one or more particular additional content by retrieving the one or more particular additional content using the URL of each additional content among the one or more particular additional content.

17. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the device is communicatively connected to the display device via an HDMI connection.
