Abstract

A system for placing a battery module in a sleep mode may include one or more sensors that monitor at least two properties associated with one or more batteries within the battery module that provides energy to a vehicle. The at least two properties may include two or more of: a state of charge, an input voltage, an input current, and a temperature. The system may also include a processor that receives measurements of the at least two properties from the one or more sensors, compares the measurements of the at least two properties to at least two respective thresholds, and places the battery module in the sleep mode when one of the measurements of the at least two properties is greater than a respective one of the at least two respective thresholds.

Claims (39)

1. A system for placing a battery module in a sleep mode, comprising:

one or more sensors configured to monitor at least two properties associated with one or more batteries within the battery module configured to provide energy to a vehicle, wherein the at least two properties comprise two or more of: a state of charge, an input voltage, an input current, and a temperature; and

a processor configured to:

receive measurements of the at least two properties from the one or more sensors;

compare the measurements of the at least two properties to at least two respective thresholds; and

place the battery module in the sleep mode when one of the measurements of the at least two properties is greater than a respective one of the at least two respective thresholds.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the state of charge associated with the at least two batteries based on at least one of the input voltage associated with the at least two batteries, the input current associated with the at least two batteries, and the temperatures associated with the at least two batteries.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to place the battery module into the sleep mode by disconnecting the one or more batteries from the vehicle.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the processor is configured to disconnect the one or more batteries from the vehicle by sending a signal to a switch within the battery module to open.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the switch is a solid state switch.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine a depth of discharge of the one or more batteries; and place the battery module in the sleep mode based on the depth of discharge.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least two respective thresholds are determined based on one or more parameters of the one or more batteries.

8. A method for placing a battery module into a sleep mode, comprising:

receiving, via a processor, at least three measures of properties from one or more sensors configured to monitor at least two properties associated with one or more batteries within the battery module configured to provide energy to a vehicle, wherein the at least three measures of properties comprise three or more of: a state of charge, an input voltage, an input current, and a temperature;

comparing, via the processor, the at least three measures of properties to at least three respective thresholds; and

placing, via the processor, the battery module in the sleep mode when one of the at least three measures of properties is greater than a respective one of the at least three respective thresholds.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein a measure of the temperature is acquired via one or more thermocouples disposed in the battery module.

10. The method of claim 8 , comprising receiving, via the processor, an input configured to place the battery module in the sleep mode upon detection of the input.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the input is received after depression of a button.

12. The method of claim 11 , comprising reactivating, via the processor, the battery module upon detection of a second input via the button.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the input is received after a button has been depressed for a predetermined amount of time.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein placing the battery module in the sleep mode comprises sending, via the processor, a signal to a switch disposed between the one or more batteries and the vehicle, wherein the signal is configured to cause the switch to open.

15. A battery management system, comprising:

a battery module;

a housing of the battery module;

a reset switch disposed on the housing, wherein the reset switch is configured to be actuated by being depressed; and

a processor configured to:

receive data regarding four properties from one or more sensors configured to monitor the four properties associated with one or more batteries within the battery module configured to provide energy to a vehicle, wherein the four properties comprise: a state of charge, an input voltage, an input current, and a temperature;

compare the data regarding the four properties to four respective thresholds; and

place the battery module in a sleep mode when data regarding one of the four properties is greater than a respective one of the four respective thresholds.

16. The battery management system of claim 15 , comprising:

a voltmeter configured to measure the input voltage;

an ammeter configured to measure the input current; and

a thermocouple configured to measure the temperature.

17. The battery management system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to place the battery module in the sleep mode upon detection of depression of the reset button.

18. The battery management system of claim 17 , wherein the processor is configured to reactivate the battery module upon detection of a second depression of the reset button.

19. The battery management system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to place the battery module into the sleep mode when data regarding the input voltage is less than an input voltage threshold.

20. The battery management system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to place the battery module into the sleep mode when data regarding the temperature is less than a temperature threshold.
