Abstract

Methods and apparatus to capture images are disclosed. An example method includes determining whether a face detected in a first frame captured at a first time with an image capturing device in a first illumination mode is in a first orientation with respect to the image capturing device, operating the image capturing device in a second illumination mode at a second time when the face detected in the first frame is in the first orientation, wherein an illumination source emits light while in the second illumination mode and does not emit light while in the first illumination mode, operating the image capturing device in the first illumination mode at the second time when the face detected in the first frame is not in the first orientation, and performing a facial recognition process on image data captured under the second illumination mode, but not on image data captured under the first illumination mode.

Claims (34)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

an image capturing device to operate in at least one of a first illumination mode in which an illumination source emits light while the image capturing device is performing image data capturing or a second illumination mode in which the illumination source does not emit light while the image capturing device is performing image data capturing; and

a logic circuit to:

determine whether a face detected in a first frame captured at a first time by the image capturing device is in a first orientation with respect to the image capturing device, the first frame captured in the second illumination mode;

place the image capturing device in the first illumination mode at a second time when the face detected in the first frame is in the first orientation;

place the image capturing device in the second illumination mode at the second time when the face detected in the first frame is not in the first orientation; and

perform a facial recognition process on image data captured under the first illumination mode, but not on image data captured under the second illumination mode.

2. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the image data captured under the first illumination mode includes high resolution image data.

3. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the logic circuit is to synchronize operation of the illumination source with the capturing of the image data under the first illumination mode or the capturing of the image data under the second illumination mode.

4. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the image capturing device is to capture a second frame at the second time, and the logic circuit is to, when a third frame captured at a third time does not include a shape corresponding to a face, place the image capturing device in the second illumination mode at a fourth time at which a fourth frame is to be captured, the fourth time being subsequent to the third time.

5. The apparatus as defined in claim 4 , wherein the third frame is captured in the second illumination mode.

6. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the illumination source is an infrared light emitting diode.

7. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , further including a binner to bin pixels of a second frame captured with the image capturing device in the second illumination mode.

8. A method, comprising:

determining, by executing an instruction with a processor, whether a face detected in a first frame captured at a first time with an image capturing device is in a first orientation with respect to the image capturing device, the first frame captured in a first illumination mode;

operating, by executing an instruction with the processor, the image capturing device in a second illumination mode at a second time when the face detected in the first frame is in the first orientation, wherein an illumination source emits light when the image capturing device is performing image data capturing while in the second illumination mode;

operating, by executing an instruction with the processor, the image capturing device in the first illumination mode at the second time when the face detected in the first frame is not in the first orientation, wherein the illumination source does not emit light when the image capturing device is performing image data capturing while in the first illumination mode; and

performing, by executing an instruction with the processor, a facial recognition process on image data captured under the second illumination mode, but not on image data captured under the first illumination mode.

9. The method as defined in claim 8 , wherein the image data captured under the first illumination mode includes high resolution image data.

10. The method as defined in claim 8 , further including capturing a second frame at the second time and when a third frame captured at a third time does not include a shape corresponding to a face, placing the image capturing device in the first illumination mode at a fourth time at which a fourth frame is to be captured, the fourth time being subsequent to the third time.

11. The method as defined in claim 10 , wherein the third frame is captured in the first illumination mode.

12. The method as defined in claim 8 , further including binning pixels of a second frame captured with the image capturing device in the first illumination mode.

13. The method as defined in claim 8 , wherein the image capturing device includes a three-dimensional sensor.

14. A tangible computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a machine to at least:

determine whether a face detected in a first frame captured at a first time with an image capturing device is in a first orientation with respect to the image capturing device, the first frame captured in a first illumination mode;

operate the image capturing device in a second illumination mode at a second time when the face detected in the first frame is in the first orientation, wherein an illumination source emits light when the image capturing device is performing image data capturing while in the second illumination mode;

operate the image capturing device in the first illumination mode at the second time when the face detected in the first frame is not in the first orientation, wherein the illumination source does not emit light when the image capturing device is performing image data capturing while in the first illumination mode; and

perform a facial recognition process on image data captured under the second illumination mode, but not on image data captured under the first illumination mode.

15. The computer readable medium as defined in claim 14 , wherein the image data captured under the first illumination mode includes high resolution image data.

16. The computer readable medium as defined in claim 14 , wherein the instructions further cause the machine to synchronize operation of the illumination source with the capturing of the image data under the first illumination mode or the capturing of the image data under the second illumination mode.

17. The computer readable medium as defined in claim 14 , wherein the instructions further cause a second frame to be capture at the second time and, when a third frame captured at a third time does not include a shape corresponding to a head, place the image capturing device in the first illumination mode at a fourth time at which a fourth frame is to be captured, the fourth time being subsequent to the third time.

18. The method as defined in claim 17 , wherein the third frame is captured in the first illumination mode.

19. The computer readable medium as defined in claim 14 , wherein the instructions further cause the machine to, bin pixels of a second frame captured with the image capturing device in the second illumination mode.

20. The computer readable medium as defined in claim 14 , wherein the illumination source is an infrared light emitting diode.
