Abstract

Headstart restore of a first volume to a second volume. In one example embodiment, a method for headstart restore of a first volume to a second volume may include invalidating, on disk, a boot segment of a volume boot record of the second volume, storing headstart restore information in the second volume, while the boot segment of the volume boot record of the second volume remains invalidated, writing data from one or more backups of the first volume to a data segment of the second volume, removing the headstart restore information from the second volume, and revalidating, on disk, the boot segment of the volume boot record of the second volume.

Claims (30)

1. A method for headstart restore of a first volume to a second volume, the method comprising:

invalidating, on disk, a boot segment of a volume boot record of the second volume;

storing headstart restore information in the second volume;

while the boot segment of the volume boot record of the second volume remains invalidated, writing data from one or more backups of the first volume to a data segment of the second volume;

removing the headstart restore information from the second volume; and

revalidating, on disk, the boot segment of the volume boot record of the second volume.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, while the boot segment of the volume boot record of the second volume remains invalidated, periodically updating the headstart restore information stored in the volume boot record.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the headstart restore information includes information about where the second volume is in a headstart restore process.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the headstart restore information includes information about a most recently written backup.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the headstart restore information includes information about progress writing a current backup.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the headstart restore information includes information about a number of bytes written from a current backup.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the headstart restore information includes information about a number of total bytes within a current backup.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the headstart restore information includes information configured to verify that the headstart restore information has not been corrupted.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information configured to verify that the headstart restore information has not been corrupted include a checksum or a hash.

10. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing one or more programs that are configured, when executed, to cause one or more processors to execute the method as recited in claim 1 .

11. A method for headstart restore of a first volume to a second volume, the method comprising:

modifying, on disk, a boot segment of a volume boot record of the second volume in order to make the second volume unmountable and inaccessible to a standard file system;

storing headstart restore information in the second volume, the headstart restore information including information about where the second volume is in a headstart restore process;

while the boot segment of the volume boot record of the second volume remains invalidated and while the second volume remains unmounted and inaccessible to a standard file system, writing data from a full image backup of the first volume and from one or more incremental image backups of the first volume to a data segment of the second volume;

removing the headstart restore information from the second volume; and

revalidating, on disk, the boot segment of the volume boot record of the second volume in order to once again make the second volume mountable and accessible to the standard file system.

The method of claim 11 , further comprising, while the boot segment of the volume boot record of the second volume remains invalidated, periodically updating the headstart restore information stored in the volume boot record to reflect updates to where the second volume is in the headstart restore process.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the volume boot record is positioned in sector zero of the second volume.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the volume boot record is defined in one or more sectors other than sector zero of the second volume.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the headstart restore information includes information about a full image backup or incremental image backup that was most recently written to the data segment of the second volume during the headstart restore process.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the headstart restore information includes information about progress writing a current full or incremental backup to the data segment of the second volume during the headstart restore process.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the headstart restore information includes information about a number of bytes written from a current full or incremental backup to the data segment of the second volume during the headstart restore process.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the headstart restore information includes information about a number of total bytes within a current full or incremental backup being written to the data segment of the second volume during the headstart restore process.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the headstart restore information includes a checksum or hash configured to verify that the headstart restore information has not been corrupted.

20. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing one or more programs that are configured, when executed, to cause one or more processors to execute the method as recited in claim 11 .
