Abstract

An apparatus for treating obesity in a human or animal mammal patient. The apparatus comprising a first volume filling device segment and a second volume filling device segment. The first and second volume filling device segments are adapted to be assembled into an implantable volume filling device of a controlled size. Each one of the first and second volume filling device segment comprises at least one interconnecting structure. The interconnecting structure of the second volume filling device segment is adapted to be formed fitted, such that the first and second volume filling device segment can be assembled into the volume filling device. The assembled volume filling device is adapted to be at least substantially invaginated by a stomach wall portion of a patient, with the outer surface of the device resting against the stomach wall, such that the volume of the food cavity is reduced in size.

Claims (26)

1. An apparatus for treating obesity in a human or animal mammal patient, the apparatus comprising:

a first volume filling device segment comprising a recess; and

a second volume filling device segment comprising a protrusion;

wherein:

the first and second volume filling device segments are adapted to be assembled into an implantable volume filling device of a controlled size;

the recess is adapted to be form fitted with the protrusion, such that the first and second volume filling device segments are immobilized relative each other in at least one plane so as to form the volume filling device;

the volume filling device is adapted to be at least substantially invaginated by a stomach wall portion of a patient, with an outer surface of the device resting against the stomach wall, such that the volume of the food cavity is reduced in size; and

the first and second volume filling device segments are adapted to disconnect from each other if the volume filling device is removed from its invaginated position, to separately pass through the intestines.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the recess and the protrusion are complementary structures.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a third volume filling device segment, wherein the first volume filling device segment is configured to form a core part of the volume filling device, and wherein the second and third volume filling device segments are configured to form outer parts of the volume filling device.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the volume filling device has a volume of at least 125 mm 3 and a minimum circumference of at least 15 millimeters.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the first and second volume filling device segments comprises a biocompatible material.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second volume filling device segments are adapted to pass through a trocar, for assembly and implantation of said volume filling device into the abdominal cavity.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second volume filling device segments have a flexible outer shape adapted to pass through a trocar.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second volume filling device segments are adapted to have a shape allowing them to be assembled into said volume filling device, when implanted.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second volume filling device segments are hollow with a flexible outer surface.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second volume filling device segments are adapted to be filled with at least one of a fluid a foam, a gel or a fluid that hardens to a solid material.

11. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second volume filling device segments are formed of a massive material.

12. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second volume filling device segments are adapted to temporary be holding their assembled position.

13. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second volume filling device segments are adapted to permanently hold their assembled position by the invaginated stomach wall.

14. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second volume filling device segments are adapted to temporary be holding their assembled position by an adhesive.

15. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second volume filling device segments are of a size that admits free passage through a gastrointestinal system.

16. The apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the core part is adapted to receive and assemble the outer parts to form the volume filling device.

17. The apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the core part has assembly slits adapted to receive corresponding assembly flanges of each of the second and third volume filling device segments when assembling the volume filling device.

18. The apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein the slits are distributed around an outer peripheral area of the core part.

19. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the recess and protrusion are configured to immobilize each other in a first plane, and wherein the first and second volume filling device segments further comprise assembly elements, which are configured, following the assembly of said first and second volume filling device segments, to immobilize each other in a second plane, intersecting the first plane.
