Abstract

A gateway device includes a media processor module comprising a gateway application module. The gateway device also includes a router module comprising a gateway abstraction module and an interface handler module. The gateway device also includes a shared interface module in communication with the router module and the media processor module. The shared interface module receives a service request signal from the gateway application module. The gateway abstraction module obtains the service request signal from the shared interface module through an interface handler module. The gateway abstraction module communicates a response signal to the media processor module through the shared interface module. The media processor module performs a function in response to the response signal.

Claims (27)

1. A method of operating a gateway device having an IP protocol stack, a router module, a media processor module and a shared interface module, said method comprising:

bidirectionally exchanging communication signals between the media processor module and the router module within the gateway device through a shared interface module of the media processor module; and

bypassing the IP protocol stack while bidirectionally exchanging communication signals through the shared interface module.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein bidirectionally exchanging communication signals comprises bidirectionally exchanging signals using a sessionless request-response protocol.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein bidirectionally exchanging communication signals comprises serializing a first signal generated at the media processor module to form a serialized first signal and communicating the serialized first signal to the shared interface module.

4. The method as recited in claim 3 wherein serializing the first signal comprises timestamping the serialized first signal with a timestamp to form a timestamped serialized first signal, and communicating the timestamped serialized first signal from the shared interface module to the router module.

5. The method as recited in claim 4 further comprising establishing a window at a system management module of the router module and processing the timestamped serialized first signal at the router when the timestamp is within the window.

6. The method as recited in claim 5 wherein bidirectionally exchanging communication signals comprises serializing and timestamping a second signal with a second timestamp and communicates the second signal to the router module through the shared interface module.

7. The method as recited in claim 6 further comprising determining the second signal is stale by comparing the second timestamp with the window and not processing the second signal at the router module.

8. The method as recited in claim 4 further comprising obtaining, at the router module, the timestamped serialized first signal from the shared interface module through an interface handler module of the router module.

9. The method as recited in claim 4 further comprising validating the timestamped serialized first signal at a validation module of the router module.

10. The method as recited in claim 9 further comprising deserializing the timestamped serialized first signal at a serializer/deserializer module of the router module.

11. A gateway device comprising:

an IP protocol stack;

a media processor module;

a router module; and

a shared interface module in communication with the router module and the media processor module, said shared interface module bidirectionally exchanging communication signals between the media processor module and the router module;

said media processor module and the router module bypassing the IP protocol stack using the shared interface module.

12. The gateway as recited in claim 11 wherein the router module and shared interface module bidirectionally communicates using a sessionless request-response protocol.

13. The gateway as recited in claim 11 wherein the media processor serializes a first signal to form a serialized first signal and communicates the serialized first signal to the shared interface module.

14. The gateway as recited in claim 13 wherein the media processor module comprises timestamping the serialized first signal to form a timestamped serialized first signal, said shared interface module communicating the timestamped serialized first signal to the shared interface module.

15. The gateway as recited in claim 14 wherein the router module comprises a system management module that processes the timestamped serialized first signal at the router when the timestamp is within a window and not processing the timestamped serialized first signal when the timestamp is outside the window.

16. The gateway as recited in claim 15 wherein the media processor module serializes and timestamps a second signal with a second timestamp and communicates the second signal to the router module through the shared interface module.

17. The gateway as recited in claim 16 wherein the media processor module determines the second signal is stale by comparing the second timestamp with the window and not processing the second signal at the router module when the second timestamp is outside the window.

18. The gateway as recited in claim 14 wherein the router module obtains the timestamped serialized first signal from the shared interface module through an interface handler module of the router module.

19. The gateway as recited in claim 14 wherein the router module comprises a validation module that validates the timestamped serialized first signal.

20. The gateway as recited in claim 19 wherein the router module further comprises a serializer/deserializer module deserializing the timestamped serialized first signal.
