Abstract

Embodiments of a valve assembly and a method of detecting a leak in the same are provided herein. In some embodiments, a valve assembly for use with an enclosed environment includes a housing having an interior volume; a first valve having a first valve seat and a first sealing member at least partially extending through a first opening in the first valve seat in a closed position; a second valve disposed beneath the first valve and having a second valve seat and a second sealing member at least partially extending through a second opening in the second valve seat in a closed position; and a position sensing device coupled to an inner wall of the housing beneath the first valve and configured to detect a position of the first sealing member.

Claims (17)

1. A valve assembly for use with an enclosed environment, comprising:

a housing having an interior volume, an inlet disposed at a first end of the housing and fluidly coupled to an environment surrounding the housing, and an outlet disposed at a second end of the housing opposite the first end and fluidly coupled to the enclosed environment;

a first valve having a first valve seat and a first sealing member at least partially extending through a first opening in the first valve seat in a closed position, wherein the first sealing member is moveable between an open position which allows air to pass through the first opening and a closed position in which the first sealing member blocks air from moving through the first opening, wherein the first valve seat is disposed in an upper portion of the interior volume;

a second valve disposed beneath the first valve and having a second valve seat and a second sealing member at least partially extending through a second opening in the second valve seat in a closed position, wherein the second sealing member is moveable between an open position which allows air to pass through the second opening and a closed position in which the second sealing member blocks air from moving through the second opening, wherein the second valve seat is disposed in a lower portion of the interior volume, wherein the first and second valve seats divide the interior volume into a first zone, a second zone, and a third zone;

a position sensing device coupled to an inner wall of the housing beneath the first valve and configured to detect a position of the first sealing member.

2. The valve assembly of claim 1 , wherein the position sensing device further comprises a plurality of electrical leads to electrically couple the position sensing device to a monitoring device.

3. The valve assembly of claim 1 , wherein the position sensing device is a mechanical device comprising a lever which extends into the interior volume beneath the first sealing member, wherein the lever is moveable between a first position, indicating the first sealing member in a closed position, a second position, indicating the first sealing member is in an open position, and a third position lower than the first position.

4. The valve assembly of claim 3 , wherein the position sensing device further comprises an indicator positioned external to the interior volume to display a position of the first sealing member.

5. The valve assembly of claim 3 , further comprising:

a pressure sensing device fluidly coupled to the first zone to determine if a positive pressure exists above the first valve.

6. The valve assembly of claim 3 , wherein the position sensing device further comprises a plurality of electrical leads to electrically couple the position sensing device to a monitoring device determining whether a lever of the position sensing device is in a first position, second position or third position, wherein position sensing device is disposed beneath the first valve, and wherein the first position, second position or third position are transmitted to a remote device.

7. A valve assembly for use with an enclosed environment where the enclosed environment is subjected to pressure fluctuations between positive pressures and vacuum pressures, comprising:

a housing having an interior volume, an inlet disposed at a first end of the housing and fluidly coupled to an environment surrounding the housing, and an outlet disposed at a second end of the housing opposite the first end and fluidly coupled to the enclosed environment;

a first valve having a first valve seat and a first sealing member at least partially extending through a first opening in the first valve seat in a closed position, wherein the first sealing member is moveable between an open position when the pressure below the first sealing member is greater than the pressure above the first sealing member which allows air to pass through the first opening and a closed position when the pressure above the first sealing member is equal to or greater than the pressure below the first sealing member in which the first sealing member blocks air from moving through the first opening, wherein the first valve seat is disposed in an upper portion of the interior volume;

a second valve disposed beneath the first valve and having a second valve seat and a second sealing member at least partially extending through a second opening in the second valve seat in a closed position, wherein the second sealing member is moveable between an open position when the pressure below the second sealing member is greater than the pressure above the second sealing member which allows air to pass through the second opening and a closed position when the pressure above the second sealing member is equal to or greater than the pressure below the second sealing member in which the second sealing member blocks air from moving through the second opening, wherein the second valve seat is disposed in a lower portion of the interior volume, wherein the first and second valve seats divide the interior volume into a first zone, a second zone, and a third zone.

8. The valve assembly of claim 7 , wherein a viewing element disposed in the housing to facilitate viewing of the second zone from outside of the housing and wherein the viewing element is a window formed of a transparent material.

9. The valve assembly of claim 8 , wherein the transparent material is one of glass, plastic, rubber, and acrylic.
