Abstract

A vehicle component includes a first volume of phase change material and a second volume of phase change material spaced apart from the first volume of phase change material. The first volume of phase change material contains a greater mass of phase change material than the second volume of phase change material. The component also includes a thermally-conductive structure in direct contact with both the first volume of phase change material and the second volume of phase change material, so as to facilitate heat transfer between the first volume of phase change material and the second volume of phase change material.

Claims (17)

1. A handle for a gear shift lever, the handle comprising:

a housing attachable to the gear shift lever;

a thermally-conductive first wall coupled to the housing;

a first volume of phase change material positioned between the housing and the first wall;

a second volume of phase change material spaced apart from the first volume of phase change material,

the first volume of phase change material containing a greater mass of phase change material than the second volume of phase change material,

and wherein both the first volume of phase change material and the second volume of phase change material are in direct contact with the thermally-conductive first wall.

2. The handle of claim 1 wherein the thermally-conductive first wall comprises a metallic material.

The handle of claim 1 wherein the first wall further comprises at least one heat transfer projection extending from a first side of the first wall in a direction toward the first volume of phase change material, and wherein the at least one heat transfer projection is in direct contact with the first volume of phase change material.

The vehicle component of claim 3 wherein the at least one heat transfer projection comprises a plurality of spaced apart depressions formed in the first wall, and wherein the first volume of phase change material is in direct contact with surfaces of the first side of the first wall along the plurality of spaced apart depressions.

5. The vehicle component of claim 3 wherein the at least one heat transfer projection comprises at least one pin attached to the first wall, the at least one pin extending from the first side of the first wall to directly contact the first volume of phase change material.

The vehicle component of claim 5 wherein the first wall has a plurality of spaced apart through-holes formed therealong and wherein the at least one heat transfer projection comprises a plurality of pins, each pin being mounted in an associated through hole of the plurality of through holes, each pin extending from the first side of the first wall to directly contact the first volume of phase change material.

7. The vehicle component of claim 3 wherein the at least one heat transfer projection comprises at least one fin attached to the first wall.

8. The vehicle component of claim 7 wherein the at least one heat transfer projection comprises a plurality of fins attached to the first wall and extending parallel to each other.

9. The vehicle component of claim 7 wherein the at least one fin is formed integrally with the first wall.

10. The vehicle component of claim 3 wherein the second volume of phase change material is positioned on a second side of the first wall opposite the first side of the first wall.

11. The vehicle component of claim 1 wherein the housing is formed from a thermally-insulative material.
