Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for automatically switching different aspiration levels to an ocular probe are disclosed herein. The probe may be a phacoemulsification probe. A first aspiration level, supplied by a first pump, may be applied to the probe simultaneously with ultrasonic energy. A second aspiration level, supplied by a second pump, may be automatically switched from the first aspiration level. Control feed back of the pumps may be varied according to set thresholds.

Claims (25)

1. A system for removing material from within an eye, comprising:

a probe having a distal tip insertable into the eye, wherein the distal tip comprises an aspiration port;

a pressure sensor; and

a console coupled with the aspiration port along an aspiration pathway, wherein the console comprises a processor and a pump system, comprising a first pump and a second pump configured to operate concurrently, the first pump for providing a base level aspiration flow by applying a base aspiration pressure differential and the second pump for providing an additive aspiration level flow during the base level aspiration flow while the first pump and the second pump operate concurrently,

wherein the processor is configured to monitor a pressure differential of the second pump via the pressure sensor and detect occlusion of the aspiration pathway by detecting an increase in the pressure differential of the second pump above the base aspiration pressure differential of the first pump, wherein upon detecting the increase in pressure differential of the second pump, the processor alters a continued operation of the first pump.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the probe comprises a phacoemulsification probe.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the probe comprises a vitrectomy probe.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first pump comprises a venturi pump and the second pump comprises a peristaltic pump.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first pump is configured to begin operation while the second pump is operating at a maximum aspiration level.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein a transitional time T R between peak aspiration levels of the first pump and the second pump increases over a period.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein a transitional time T R between peak aspiration levels of the first pump and the second pump constantly increases over a period.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first pump is energized before a start time of a ramp-down of aspiration flow of the second pump.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first pump is energized during a start time of a ramp-down of aspiration flow of the second pump.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first pump is energized after a start time of a ramp-down of aspiration flow of the second pump.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein a ramp-up of the first pump is linear and a ramp-down of the second pump is linear.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein a ramp-up of the first pump is non-linear and a ramp-down of the second pump is non-linear.

13. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a flow selector valve configured to switch between the first pump and the second pump, without a need for user interaction.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detection of the increase in the pressure differential of the second pump is facilitated by altering operation of a pressure-regulating system of the first pump.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detection of the increase in the pressure differential of the second pump is facilitated by inhibiting operation of a pressure-regulating system of the first pump.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the altered operation is a power down of the first pump or the second pump.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor configured to detect occlusion is configured to detect partial occlusion.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor configured to detect occlusion is configured to detect that the probe is not sufficiently occluded and is configured to provide ultrasonic energy to cataract tissue if the probe is not sufficiently occluded.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein upon detecting the increase in pressure differential of the second pump, the processor alters a continued operation of the second pump.

20. The system of claim 1 , wherein upon detecting the increase in pressure differential of the second pump, the processor adjusts ultrasonic energy of the probe.
