Multicopter-assisted system and method for launching and retrieving a fixed-wing aircraft
The present disclosure provides various embodiments of a multicopter-assisted launch and retrieval system generally including: (1) a multi-rotor modular multicopter attachable to (and detachable from) a fixed-wing aircraft to facilitate launch of the fixed-wing aircraft into wing-borne flight; (2) a storage and launch system usable to store the modular multicopter and to facilitate launch of the fixed-wing aircraft into wing-borne flight; and (3) an anchor system usable (along with the multicopter and a flexible capture member) to retrieve the fixed-wing aircraft from wing-borne flight.
1. A multicopter comprising:
multiple arms each including a rotor and a rotor motor drivingly engaged to the rotor; and
a hub base including:
multiple first portions to which the multiple arms are respectively attachable;
multiple second portions each extending between two of the multiple first portions, wherein each of the multiple second portions includes a battery receiver configured to receive a battery and to electrically connect the battery to the rotor motor of at least one of the arms;
an inertial measurement unit attached to at least one of the multiple second portions; and
a suspension at least partially disposed between and attaching the multiple first portions and the multiple second portions of the hub base, wherein the suspension includes multiple first springs between the multiple first portions and the multiple second portions of the hub base.
2. The multicopter of claim 1 , which includes a controller communicatively connectable to the rotor motor of at least one of the arms to control the rotor motor, the controller attached to one of the multiple second portions of the hub base.
3. The multicopter of claim 1 , wherein the multiple first springs are conical springs.
4. The multicopter of claim 1 , wherein the suspension includes multiple second springs positioned between multiple retaining elements and the multiple second portions of the hub base, the multiple first and second springs positioned on opposing sides of the multiple second portions of the hub base.

The multicopter of claim 4 , wherein the multiple first springs are conical springs positioned between the multiple first portions and the multiple second portions of the hub base, and the multiple second springs are conical springs positioned between the multiple retaining elements and the multiple second portions of the hub base, the multiple first and second conical springs positioned on opposing sides of the multiple second portions of the hub base.
6. The multicopter of claim 1 , wherein the multiple first portions of the hub base include multiple mounting posts, the multiple second portions of the hub base define multiple mounting openings, and the multiple mounting posts are respectively receivable in the multiple mounting openings.
7. The multicopter of claim 6 , wherein the multiple mounting posts do not directly contact the multiple second portions of the hub base when received in the multiple mounting openings.
8. The multicopter of claim 6 , which includes multiple elastomeric grommets attached to the multiple second portions of the hub base, each elastomeric grommet defining one of the multiple mounting openings.
9. The multicopter of claim 6 , wherein the multiple first springs are conical springs.
10. The multicopter of claim 6 , wherein the suspension includes multiple second springs between multiple retaining elements and the multiple second portions of the hub base, the multiple first and second springs positioned on opposing sides of the multiple second portions of the hub base.
11. The multicopter of claim 10 , wherein the multiple second springs are conical springs.
12. The multicopter of claim 10 , wherein the suspension includes a constraining element positioned to enable restricted movement of the multiple first and second portions of the hub base relative to one another.
13. The multicopter of claim 12 , wherein the suspension includes multiple constraining elements, each constraining element attached to one of the mounting posts.
