Abstract

The invention generally pertains to a combination of a surgical with a computer-assisted surgery system. The surgical tool may be used as an input device, allowing information to pass from the user to the computer-assisted surgery system, and providing functionality similar to common user interface devices, such as a mouse or any other input device. When used as an input device, it may be used for defining anatomical reference geometry, manipulating the position and/or orientation of virtual implants, manipulating the position and/or orientation of surgical approach trajectories, manipulating the positions and/or orientation of bone resections, and the selection or placement of any other anatomical or surgical feature.

Claims (25)

1. A method of using a surgical tool as an input device, comprising:

initiating an input mode of a computer-assisted surgery system;

receiving by a processor of the computer-assisted surgery system an input from the surgical tool for defining a virtual boundary object, wherein the virtual boundary object represents at least one of a surgical approach trajectory or a planned bone resection;

defining at least one of a position, a size, a shape, and an orientation of the virtual boundary object based on the input from the surgical tool by:

recording motion of the surgical tool as the surgical tool traces a boundary of a desired region in real space; and

defining the virtual boundary object to include coordinates in real space on the boundary traced by the surgical tool.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the defining step comprises defining the virtual boundary object based at least in part on a change in pose of the surgical tool.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the defining step comprises recording the motion of the surgical tool as an end portion of the surgical tool touches portions of a desired region.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising modifying the at least one of the position, the size, the shape, and the orientation of the defined boundary object based on a second input from the surgical tool, the second input comprising a second recorded motion of the surgical tool.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the modifying step comprises modifying the virtual boundary object by determining one or more second endpoints of the second recorded motion and defining the virtual boundary object based on the one or more second endpoints.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual boundary object is a haptic boundary, the method comprising providing haptic feedback at the surgical tool based on the haptic boundary.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying a diagnostic image of an anatomy and a representation of the virtual boundary object on the diagnostic image.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein defining the virtual boundary object to include the coordinates in real space on the boundary traced by the surgical tool comprises creating a cylindrical object that includes the coordinates.

9. A system for performing a medical procedure, comprising:

a computer-assisted surgery system;

a surgical tool operable to provide input to the computer-assisted surgery system to define a virtual boundary object; and

a processor associated with the computer-assisted surgery system and programmed to define at least one of a position, a size, a shape, and an orientation of the virtual boundary object based on the input from the surgical tool by recording motion of the surgical tool as the surgical tool traces a boundary of a desired region in real space and defining the virtual boundary object to include coordinates in real space on the boundary traced by the surgical tool.

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a display device to display a diagnostic image and a representation of the virtual boundary object on the diagnostic image.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the surgical tool comprises an end effector configured for sculpting bone and providing the input.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the end effector is a bone sculpting tool.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further programmed to define the virtual boundary object based at least in part on a change in pose of the surgical tool.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further programmed to record the motion of the surgical tool as an end portion of the surgical tool touches portions of a desired region.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further programmed to modify at least one of a position, a size, a shape, and an orientation of the defined boundary object based on a second input from the surgical tool, the second input comprising a second recorded motion of the surgical tool.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further programmed to modify the virtual boundary object, by determining one or more second endpoints of the second recorded motion and defining the virtual boundary object based on the one or more second endpoints.

17. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is configured to define the virtual boundary object to include the coordinates in real space on the boundary traced by the surgical tool by creating a cylindrical object that includes the coordinates.
