Abstract

A system to convey user alert messages is disclosed. The system may have a alert service coupled between alert providers and a number of households. After receiving in the alert service an alert message from an alert provider, the alert service may alter the alert message to identify the household designated to receive the alert message. The alert service sends a notification to a home media system within the household designated to receive the alert message.

Claims (62)

1. A method for selectively displaying on a display screen alert messages received from an alert provider, comprising:

receiving, at control circuitry, an alert message from an alert provider;

prior to generating for display content of the alert message, determining, by the control circuitry, whether a user's settings for the alert provider permit automatically generating for display the content of the alert message; and

based on determining that the user did not select to permit automatically generating for display the content of the alert message:

generating for display, on a display screen, an icon representing the alert message; and

generating for display, on the display screen, the content of the alert message upon receiving an input from the user.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the alert message comprises receiving the alert message from a public distribution network.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alert provider is a third party.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is associated with a home media system.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the icon comprises a company mark that identifies a company originating the alert message.

6. An alert service system for selectively displaying on a display screen alert messages received from an alert provider, comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

receive an alert message from an alert provider;

prior to generating for display content of the alert message, determine whether a user's settings for the alert provider permit automatically generating for display the content of the alert message; and

based on determining that the user did not select to permit automatically generating for display the content of the alert message:

generate for display, on a display screen, an icon representing the alert message; and

generate for display, on the display screen, the content of the alert message upon receiving an input from the user.

7. The alert service system of claim 6 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when receiving the alert message, to receive the alert message from a public distribution network.

8. The alert service system of claim 6 , wherein the alert provider is a third party.

9. The alert service system of claim 6 , wherein the control circuitry is associated with a home media system.

10. The alert service system of claim 6 , wherein the icon comprises a company mark that identifies a company originating the alert message.

11. A method for pruning expired alert messages received from an alert provider, comprising:

receiving, at control circuitry, an alert message from an alert provider;

storing content of the alert message in a database;

assigning to the alert message a predetermined time period for retrieving the content of the alert message;

receiving a first user input to view content of a plurality of alert messages;

determining that the time period for retrieving the content of the alert message has not expired;

based on receiving the first user input and determining that the time period for retrieving the content of the alert message has not expired:

retrieving the content of the alert message from the database; and

generating for display, on a display screen, a display wherein the user can view the content of the plurality of alert messages, wherein the display includes the content of the alert message;

receiving a second user input to view the content of the plurality of alert messages;

determining that the time period for retrieving the content of the alert message has expired; and

based on receiving the second user input and determining that the time period for retrieving the content of the alert message has expired:

deleting the content of the alert message from the database; and

generating for display, on the display screen, the display wherein the user can view the content of the plurality of alert messages, wherein the display does not include the content of the alert message.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein generating for display, on the display screen, the display wherein the user can view the content of the plurality of alert messages, comprises:

generating for display text associated with the content of the alert message and an icon representing the alert message.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the icon comprises a company mark that identifies a company originating the alert message.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein receiving the alert message comprises receiving the alert message from a public distribution network.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the alert provider is a third party.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is associated with a home media system.

17. An alert service system for pruning expired alert messages received from an alert provider, comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

receive an alert message from an alert provider;

store content of the alert message in a database;

assign to the alert message a predetermined time period for retrieving the content of the alert message;

receive a first user input to view content of a plurality of alert messages;

determine that the time period for retrieving the content of the alert message has not expired;

based on receiving the first user input and determining that the time period for retrieving the content of the alert message has not expired:

retrieve the content of the alert message from the database; and

generate for display, on a display screen, a display wherein the user can view the content of the plurality of alert messages, wherein the display includes the content of the alert message;

receive a second user input to view the content of the plurality of alert messages;

determine that the time period for retrieving the content of the alert message has expired; and

based on receiving the second user input and determining that the time period for retrieving the content of the alert message has expired:

delete the content of the alert message from the database; and

generate for display, on the display screen, the display wherein the user can view the content of the plurality of alert messages, wherein the display does not include the content of the alert message.

18. The alert service system of claim 17 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when generating for display, on the display screen, the display wherein the user can view the content of the plurality of alert messages, to:

generate for display text associated with the content of the alert message and an icon representing the alert message.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the icon comprises a company mark that identifies a company originating the alert message.

20. The alert system of claim 17 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when receiving the alert message, to receive the alert message from a public distribution network.

21. The alert system of claim 17 , wherein the alert provider is a third party.

22. The alert system of claim 17 , wherein the control circuitry is associated with a home media system.
