Abstract

Systems and methods for overload management of Internet-of-Things (IoT) gateways. In some embodiments, an Information Handling System (IHS) may include a processor and a memory coupled to the processor, the memory including program instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by the processor, cause the IHS to: detect an overload condition in the IHS; in response to the detection, compare a current volatility of a data field against a volatility baseline for that data field, wherein the data field is one of a plurality of other fields contained within a packet communicated between an IoT device and the IHS; and take responsive action based, at least in part, upon the comparison.

Claims (35)

1. An Information Handling System (IHS), comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory coupled to the one or more processors, the memory comprising program instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by the one or more processors, cause the IHS to:

inspect a packet communicated from an Internet-of-Things (IoT) device to the IHS, wherein the packet comprises a plurality of data fields, and wherein each of the plurality of data fields has a priority value associated therewith;

compare a current volatility of a data field, among the plurality of data fields, against a volatility baseline for the data field;

detect an overload condition based upon the comparison; and

in response to the detection: (i) instruct the IoT device to reduce a size of the data field; and (ii) reduce the priority value of the data field relative to other data fields among the plurality of data fields for subsequently inspected packets communicated from the IoT device to the IHS.

2. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the overload condition further comprises at least one of: (i) a core temperature above a threshold, or (ii) a latency or error rate above another threshold.

3. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the volatility baseline is created based upon historical metrics associated with the data field.

4. The IHS of claim 3 , wherein the volatility baseline is built by populating a volatility model with data obtained from inspecting previous packets communicated between the IoT device and the IHS.

5. The IHS of claim 4 , wherein the volatility model comprises a list of data fields to be obtained from each packet communicated to the IHS.

6. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions, upon execution, further cause the IHS to, in response to the detection, reduce a size of the data field.

7. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions, upon execution, further cause the IHS to, in response to the detection, reduce a packet collection rate for subsequent packets communicated between the IoT device and the IHS.

8. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions, upon execution, further cause the IHS to, in response to the detection, instruct the IoT device to reduce a data acquisition rate of a sensor within the IoT device.

9. A hardware memory device having program instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by an Information Handling System (IHS), cause the IHS to:

inspect a packet communicated from an Internet-of-Things (IoT) device to the IHS, wherein the packet comprises a plurality of data fields, and wherein each of the plurality of data fields has a priority value associated therewith;

compare a current volatility of a data field, among the plurality of data fields, against a volatility baseline for the data field;

detect an overload condition based upon the comparison; and

in response to the detection: (i) instruct the IoT device to reduce a size of the data field; and (ii) reduce the priority value of the data field relative to other data fields among the plurality of data fields for subsequently inspected packets communicated from the IoT device to the IHS.

10. The hardware memory device of claim 9 , wherein the overload condition comprises a core temperature above a threshold.

11. The hardware memory device of claim 9 , wherein the volatility baseline is created based upon historical metrics associated with the data field.

12. The hardware memory device of claim 11 , wherein the volatility baseline is built by populating a volatility model with data obtained from inspecting previous packets communicated between the IoT device and the IHS.

13. The hardware memory device of claim 12 , wherein the volatility model comprises a list of data fields to be obtained from each packet communicated to the IHS.

14. The hardware memory device of claim 9 , wherein the program instructions, upon execution, further cause the IHS to, in response to the detection, postpone a get or put request.

15. The hardware memory device of claim 9 , wherein the program instructions, upon execution, further cause the IHS to, in response to the detection, reduce a packet collection rate for subsequent packets communicated between the IoT device and the IHS, or instruct the IoT device to reduce a data acquisition rate of a sensor within the IoT device.

16. A method, comprising:

inspecting a packet communicated from an Internet-of-Things (IoT) device to the IHS, wherein the packet comprises a plurality of data fields, and wherein each of the plurality of data fields has a priority value associated therewith;

comparing a current volatility of a data field, among the plurality of data fields, against a volatility baseline for the data field;

detecting an overload condition based upon the comparison; and

in response to the detection: (i) instructing the IoT device to reduce a size of the data field;

and (ii) reducing the priority value of the data field relative to other data fields among the plurality of data fields for subsequently inspected packets communicated from the IoT device to the IHS.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the overload condition comprises a core temperature above a threshold.

18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising building the volatility baseline by populating a volatility model with data obtained from inspecting previous packets communicated between the first IoT device and the IHS.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the volatility model comprises a list of data fields to be obtained from each packet communicated to the IHS.

20. The method of claim 16 , further comprising, in response to the detection, instructing the third IoT device to reduce a data acquisition rate of a sensor coupled to the IoT device.
