Abstract

The present document describes methods of use of photo activated compositions for oral disinfection and/or treatments which comprise at least one oxidant, at least one photoactivator capable of activating the oxidant, and at least one healing factor chosen from hyaluronic acid, glucosamine and allantoin, in association with a pharmacologically acceptable carrier.

Claims (29)

1. A method of treating a red, swollen, or bleeding gum or for reducing bad breath, comprising:

a) applying on a patient's oral tissue an effective amount of a composition comprising at least one oxidant, a fluorescent compound, and a healing factor selected from hyaluronic acid, glucosamine and allantoin; and

b) exposing said composition to actinic light having an emission wavelength between about 400 nm and 700 nm for a time sufficient to cause a change in color of the fluorescent compound.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said composition is exposed to actinic light for a period of less than about 5 minutes.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein said composition is exposed to actinic light for a period of about 60 seconds to about 5 minutes.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said composition is exposed to actinic light for a period of less than about 5 minutes per cm 2 of an area to be treated.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein said composition is exposed to actinic light for a period of about 60 seconds to about 5 minutes per cm 2 of an area to be treated.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said oral tissue is on or near at least one tooth.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein said oral tissue that is on or near at least one tooth is exposed to actinic light for a period of about at least 10 seconds on a vestibular side, and of about at least 10 seconds on a oral side.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the oxidant is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide and benzoyl peroxide.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the oxidant is selected from a group consisting of a peroxy acid and an alkali metal percarbonate.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises at least one hydrophilic gelling agent.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the hydrophilic gelling agent is selected from glucose, modified starch, methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, propyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carbomer polymers, alginic acid, sodium alginate, potassium alginate, ammonium alginate, calcium alginate, agar, carrageenan, locust bean gum, pectin, and gelatin.

12. The use according to claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises at least one chelating agent selected from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA).

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the fluorescent compound is selected from the group consisting of a xanthene derivative dye, an azo dye, a biological stain and a carotenoid.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the xanthene derivative dye is selected from the group consisting of a fluorene dye, a fluorine dye, a rhodole dye, and a combination of any of the foregoing.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein said fluorene dye is selected from a pyronine dye and a rhodamine dye.

16. The method according to claim 15 , wherein said pyronine dye is selected from pyronine Y and pyronine B.

17. The method according to claim 15 , wherein said rhodamine dye is selected from rhodamine B, rhodamine G and rhodamine WT.

18. The method according to claim 14 , wherein said fluorone dye is selected from fluorescein and fluorescein derivatives.

19. The method according to claim 18 , wherein said fluorescein derivative is selected from phloxine B, rose bengal, and merbromine.

20. The method according to claim 18 , wherein said fluorescein derivative is selected from eosin Y, eosin B, and erythrosine B.

21. The method according to claim 20 , wherein said fluorescein derivative is Eosin Y.

22. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said azo dye is selected from methyl violet, neutral red, para red, amaranth, carmoisine, allura red AC, tartrazine, orange G, ponceau 4R, methyl red, and murexide-ammonium purpurate.

23. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said biological stain is selected from saffranin O, basic fuchsin, acid fuschin, 3,3′ dihexylocarbocyanine iodide, carminic acid, and indocyanine green.

24. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said carotenoid is selected from crocetin, a-crocin (S,S-diapo-S,S-carotenoic acid), zeaxanthine, lycopene, α-carotene, β-carotene, bixin, and fucoxanthine.

25. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said carotenoid is present in the composition as a mixture selected from saffron red powder, annatto extract and brown algae extract.

26. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises at least one of: rhodamine B, rhodamine WT, rhodamine G, phloxine B, rose bengal, merbromine, eosin B, fluorescein, erythrosine B, saffranin O, saffron red powder, annatto extract, brown algae extract, basic fuchsin, acid fuschin, 3,3′ dihexylocarbocyanine iodide, carminic acid, indocyanine green, crocetin, α-crocin (8,8-diapo-8,8-carotenoic acid), zeaxanthine, lycopene, .alpha.-carotene, β-carotene, bixin, fucoxanthine, methyl violet, neutral red, para red, amaranth, carmoisine, allura red AC, tartrazine, orange G, ponceau 4R, methyl red, murexide-ammonium purpurate, pyronine Y, and pyronine B.
