Abstract

Disclosed herein are system, apparatus, article of manufacture, method, and/or computer program product embodiments for providing a representation to a connected device. An embodiment operates by recognizing a new device connected to a display device, collecting device fingerprint information from the new device, and requesting a device class representation information determined based on the device fingerprint information. Another embodiment operates by receiving device fingerprint information from a display device via a network connection, wherein the device fingerprint information is collected from a device connected to a display device, and providing device class representation information to the display device via the network connection, when the device class representation information corresponding to the device fingerprint information is available.

Claims (65)

1. A display device, comprising:

a memory; and

at least one processor coupled to the memory and configured to:

recognize a device connected to the display device,

collect device fingerprint information from the device connected to the display device,

request device class representation information corresponding to the device fingerprint information from a server, wherein the request includes the device fingerprint information,

receive the device class representation information from the server, wherein the device class representation information includes a suggested device class name associated with the connected device, wherein the received device class representation information is generated based on at least crowd sourced representation information, and wherein the crowd sourced representation information includes an aggregate of device class representation information for the connected device that were sent to the server.

2. The display device of claim 1 , the at least one processor further configured to:

search a cached device representation database for a matching device fingerprint information associated with the device, and

determine that no device fingerprint information in the cached device representation database matches the device fingerprint information of the device.

3. The display device of claim 2 , the at least one processor further configured to:

visually present the received device class representation information on a display, and

assign the suggested device class name to the device, in response to a device class representation acceptance signal.

4. The display device of claim 3 , the at least one processor further configured to:

assign a user selected device class name to the device, in response to receiving a device class name override signal, and

transmit the user selected device class name to the server.

5. The display device of claim 2 , wherein

the memory includes the cached device representation database, and

the cached device representation database is configured to store device fingerprint information and corresponding device class representation information for one or more devices.

6. The display device of claim 1 , wherein

the received device class representation information is generated based on at least the crowd sourced representation information stored in a device representation database,

the crowd sourced representation information includes the aggregate of both the device class representation information and corresponding device fingerprint information that were sent to the server by one or more display devices, and

the device class representation information includes a user selected device class name that was sent to the server for the connected device by the one or more display devices.

7. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the device class representation information includes at least one of a device class name and/or a device class image associated with the device class name.

8. The display device of claim 7 , wherein

the device class name is a generic description of the device connected to the display device, and

the device class image is a generic image associated with the device class name.

9. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the device fingerprint information includes at least one of a vendor identifier, product identifier, and/or on screen display information.

10. A display device, comprising:

a memory; and

at least one processor coupled to the memory and configured to:

recognize a device connected to the display device,

collect device fingerprint information from the device connected to the display device,

request device class representation information corresponding to the device fingerprint information from a server, wherein the request includes the device fingerprint information,

receive an indication from the server indicating that the device class representation information is not available, and

transmit a user selected device class representation information and corresponding device class fingerprint information to the server, wherein the server generates the requested device class representation information based on at least crowd sourced representation information, and wherein the crowd sourced representation information includes an aggregate of device class representation information transmitted to the server for the connected device.

11. The display device of claim 10 , the at least one processor further configured to:

search a cached device representation database for a matching device fingerprint information associated with the device, and

determine that no device fingerprint information in the cached device representation database matches the device fingerprint information of the device.

12. The display device of claim 11 , the at least one processor further configured to:

visually present a user interface view on a display that includes a list of one or more device class names and a prompt for selecting a device class name by a user, in response to the indication that the device class representation information is not available, and

receive a device class representation selection signal indicating a user selection of the device class name for the device.

13. The display device of claim 12 , the at least one processor further configured to:

assign the user selected device class name to the device, in response to the device class representation selection signal, wherein the device class representation information includes the user selected device class name, and

store the user selected device class representation information and corresponding device class fingerprint information in the cached device representation database.

14. The display device of claim 10 , wherein the device class representation information includes a device class name that represents a generic description of the device connected to the display device.

15. The display device of claim 10 , wherein the device fingerprint information includes at least one of a vendor identifier, a product identifier, and/or on screen display information.

16. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

recognizing a device connected to a display device;

collecting device fingerprint information from the device connected to the display device,

requesting device class representation information corresponding to the device fingerprint information from a server, wherein the request includes the device fingerprint information;

receiving the device class representation information from the server, wherein the device class representation information includes a suggested device class name associated with the connected device, wherein the received device class representation information is generated based on at least crowd sourced representation information, and wherein the crowd sourced representation information includes an aggregate of device class representation information for the connected device that were sent to the server.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 16 , further comprising:

searching a cached device representation database for a matching device fingerprint information associated with the device, and

determining that no device fingerprint information in the cached device representation database matches the device fingerprint information of the device.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 17 , further comprising:

presenting, visually, the received device class representation information on a display, and

assigning the suggested device class name to the device, in response to a device class representation acceptance signal.

19. The computer-implemented method of claim 18 , further comprising:

assigning a user selected device class name to the device, in response to receiving a device class name override signal, and

transmitting the user selected device class name to the server.

20. The computer-implemented method of claim 16 , wherein:

the received device class representation information is generated based on at least the crowd sourced representation information stored in a device representation database,

the crowd sourced representation information includes the aggregate of the device class representation information and corresponding device fingerprint information that were sent to the server by one or more display devices, and

the device class representation information includes a user selected device class name that was sent to the server for the connected device by the one or more display devices.
