Abstract

An intravascular device, such as a stylet or catheter, having a flexible, atraumatic tip is disclosed. The intravascular device includes an elongate member having a proximal end, a distal end, and an inner lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal end; a ring electrode disposed at the distal end of the elongate member; an ultrasound sensor disposed at a distal end of the ring electrode; and a first electrical conductor configured to convey an electrocardiogram signal from the ring electrode to a processor. The first electrical conductor may comprise a tapered distal segment or a braided segment.

wherein the first electrical conductor comprises a tapered distal segment, wherein a distal portion of the tapered distal segment is attached to the adaptor member and a distal portion of the adaptor member is attached to the ring electrode, and

wherein a proximal portion of the adaptor member is disposed radially within and longitudinally overlapped by the elongate member, and the distal portion of the adaptor member is disposed within the ring electrode.

2. The intravascular device of claim 1 ,

wherein a distal portion of the intravascular device is more flexible than a proximal portion of the intravascular device, and

wherein the tapered distal segment of the first electrical conductor is disposed in the distal portion of the intravascular device.

3. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein the first electrical conductor extends from the distal portion of the adaptor member beyond the proximal end of the elongate member.

4. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion of the adaptor member is attached to the distal end of the elongate member.

5. The intravascular device of claim 4 , wherein the attachment of the proximal portion of the adaptor member and the distal end of the elongate member forms a fluid-tight seal.

6. The intravascular device of claim 5 , wherein an adhesive is used to attach the proximal portion of the adaptor member to the distal end of the elongate member.

7. The intravascular device of claim 1 ,

wherein the distal portion of the tapered distal segment is welded to the adaptor member, and

wherein the distal portion of the adaptor member is welded to the ring electrode.

8. The intravascular device of claim 1 , further comprising a second electrical conductor configured to convey an ultrasound signal from the ultrasound sensor to the processor,

wherein the first electrical conductor and the second electrical conductor are disposed within the inner lumen of the elongate member.

9. The intravascular device of claim 8 , further comprising an electrical connector having a first end and a second end,

wherein the first end is configured to connect to the processor, and

wherein a proximal end of the first electrical conductor and a proximal end of the second electrical conductor are attached to the second end of the electrical connector.

10. The intravascular device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is configured to determine a position of a distal end of the intravascular device based on information calculated using the electrocardiogram signal from the ring electrode and the ultrasound signal from the ultrasound sensor.

11. The intravascular device of claim 1 , further comprising a first encapsulating member forming a first enclosure around the ultrasound sensor.

12. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein the elongate member is a polyimide tube.

an adaptor member connecting the first electrical conductor to the ring electrode;

a first encapsulating member forming a first enclosure around the ultrasound sensor; and

a second encapsulating member forming a second enclosure around the ultrasound sensor,

wherein the first electrical conductor comprises a tapered distal segment, wherein a distal portion of the tapered distal segment is attached to the adaptor member and a distal portion of the adaptor member is attached to the ring electrode,

wherein a proximal portion of the adaptor member is disposed within the elongate member, and the distal portion of the adaptor member is disposed within the ring electrode, and

wherein the second encapsulating member is attached to the ring electrode and forms a fluid-tight seal around the ring electrode.

14. The intravascular device of claim 13 , wherein the second encapsulating member comprises an outer diameter that is greater than an outer diameter of the elongate member and an outer diameter of the ring electrode.

15. The intravascular device of claim 14 , wherein the outer diameter of the second encapsulating member is less than or equal to 0.02 inches.

16. The intravascular device of claim 14 , wherein the outer diameter of the elongate member and the outer diameter of the ring electrode are substantially equal.
