Abstract

Breathprint sensor systems for verifying the identity of a person using gases produced by the person are disclosed. The breathprint sensor systems include one or more sensors having first response characteristics to compounds in gases and one or more processors being configured to receive a set of test data provided by the one or more first sensors based on an exposure of the one or more first sensors to gases produced by a person and determine whether or not the set of test data verifies the identity of the person. Some aspects of the disclosure relate to a smart inhaler system using a breathprint sensor to assist in delivery of drugs to users through inhalation. Methods for operating breathprint sensor and smart inhaler systems and computer-readable media for implementing the methods are also disclosed.

Claims (55)

1 . A smart inhaler system for compliance-based delivery of one or more drugs to a person by inhalation, the system comprising:

a breathprint sensor system configured to process gases produced by the person;

an inhaler apparatus configured to deliver the one or more drugs to the person by inhalation when the inhaler apparatus is received by the person; and

a control system configured to:

receive drug dosage data and time data, the drug dosage data identifying a past dosage of the one or more drugs, the time data identifying a time at which the past dosage was delivered to the person, and

control an operation of the inhaler apparatus according to at least the drug dosage data and the time data.

2 . The smart inhaler system of claim 1 , wherein controlling the operation of the inhaler apparatus comprises:

adjusting a current dosage of the one or more drugs.

3 . The smart inhaler system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a memory configured to store the drug dosage data in association with the time data, the memory in communication with the control system.

The smart inhaler system of claim 3 , the memory further configured to store compliance data identifying a plurality of past dosages and a plurality of times at which the past dosages were delivered in association with patient identity data identifying the person, the compliance data comprising the drug dosage data and the time data.

The smart inhaler system of claim 1 , wherein the drug dosage data and the time data are received from a database configured to record compliance data identifying a plurality of past dosages and a plurality of times at which the past dosages were delivered in association with patient identity data identifying the person, the compliance data comprising the drug dosage data and the time data.

6 . The smart inhaler system of claim 1 , the control system further configured to:

identify a current dosage of the one or more drugs and a current time for delivery of the current dosage to the person.

7 . The smart inhaler system of claim 6 , further comprising a database storing compliance data, the control system further configured to:

provide compliance information indicating the current dosage and the current time as an update to the database.

8 . The smart inhaler system of claim 1 , the control system further configured to:

compare, with a drug delivery schedule, one or both of:

the drug dosage data and the time data, or

a current dosage of the one or more drugs and a current time for delivery of the current dosage to the person, and

determine, based on the comparison, compliance of the person with the drug delivery schedule, the operation of the inhaler apparatus being further controlled according to the compliance.

9 . The smart inhaler system of claim 1 , wherein the operation of the inhaler apparatus is further controlled according to one or both of: a biological condition or an environmental condition.

10 . A smart inhaler system for compliance-based delivery of one or more drugs to a person by inhalation, the system comprising:

a breathprint sensor system configured to process gases produced by the person, the breathprint sensor system comprising a plurality of sensors having response characteristics to compounds in the gases, the response characteristics being at different levels responsive to exposure of the sensors to a breath sample following an instructed administering of the one or more drugs to the person, the sensors configured to output sensor data representing the different levels of the response;

an inhaler apparatus configured to deliver the one or more drugs to the person by inhalation when the inhaler apparatus is received by the person; and

a control system configured to:

receive the sensor data; and

determine, based on the sensor data, one or both of:

a dosage of the one or more drugs to the person, or

a time for administering the dosage to the person.

11 . The smart inhaler system of claim 10 , the control system further configured to control one or both of:

operation of the inhaler apparatus according to at least the dosage and the time, the operation comprising administering of the dosage to the person, or

output of an alert according to the sensor data.

12 . The smart inhaler system of claim 10 , further comprising a database storing compliance data, the control system further configured to:

provide compliance information indicating the dosage and the time as an update to the database.

13 . The smart inhaler system of claim 10 , the control system further configured to:

compare, with a drug delivery schedule, the dosage and the time,

determine, based on the comparison, compliance of the person with the drug delivery schedule, and

control operation of the inhaler apparatus, at least in part, according to the compliance.

14 . The smart inhaler system of claim 10 , the sensors configured to detect a change of one or more markers related to pharmacokinetics of the one or more drugs.

15 . The smart inhaler system of claim 10 , wherein each sensor comprises a polymer layer having a variable conductance based on exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gases.

16 . The smart inhaler system of claim 10 , further comprising:

an interface system providing communication among at least the breathprint sensor system, the inhaler apparatus, and the control system, the interface system comprising a wireless network interface for exchanging data with an external device via a wireless network.

The smart inhaler system of claim 16 , the interface system comprising an input/output system configured to receive user inputs and provide information to users, the input/output system comprising one or more of: a display device, a light emitting diode, a speaker, a touch sensitive input device, a button, or a haptic device.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing program code to be executed by one or more processors associated with a breathprint sensor system configured to process gases produced by a person and associated with an inhaler apparatus configured to deliver one or more drugs to the person by inhalation when the inhaler apparatus is received by the person, the program code comprising instructions configured to cause:

processing drug dosage data and time data, the drug dosage data identifying a past dosage of the one or more drugs, the time data identifying a time at which the past dosage was delivered to the person; and

controlling an operation of the inhaler apparatus according to at least the drug dosage data and the time data.

A method for compliance-based delivery of one or more drugs to a person by inhalation in association with a breathprint sensor system configured to process gases produced by the person, the breathprint sensor system comprising a plurality of sensors having response characteristics to compounds in the gases, the response characteristics being at different levels responsive to exposure of the sensors to a breath sample following an instructed first administering of the one or more drugs to the person, the sensors configured to output sensor data representing the different levels of the response, and in association with an inhaler apparatus configured to deliver the one or more drugs to the person by inhalation when the inhaler apparatus is received by the person, the method comprising:

receiving the sensor data; and

determining, based on the sensor data, one or both of:

a dosage of the one or more drugs to the person, or

a time for administering the dosage to the person; and

controlling one or both of:

operation of the inhaler apparatus according to at least the dosage and the time, the operation comprising administering of the dosage to the person, or

output of an alert according to the sensor data.
