Abstract

A surgical instrument system comprising a shaft, an end effector, a firing member, a sensor system, an electric motor, a trigger coupled to the electric motor, and a control system is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw rotatable relative to the first jaw. The firing member comprises a first portion configured to engage the first jaw and a second portion configured to engage the second jaw and control a position of the second jaw relative to the first jaw. The sensor system is configured to detect positions of the firing member. The electric motor is configured to move the firing member through a firing stroke. The control system is in communication with the sensor system, the electric motor, and the trigger. The control system is configured to limit a maximum movement of the trigger based on a signal generated by the sensor system.

Claims (48)

1. A surgical instrument system, comprising:

a shaft;

an end effector extending from said shaft, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a first jaw; and

a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw;

an actuation member movable toward said distal end during an actuation stroke, wherein said actuation member comprises a first portion configured to engage said first jaw and a second portion configured to engage said second jaw and control a position of said second jaw relative to said first jaw during said actuation stroke;

a sensor system configured to detect positions of said actuation member during said actuation stroke;

an electric motor configured to move said actuation member through said actuation stroke;

a trigger coupled to said electric motor, wherein a rotational speed of said electric motor is related to an amount of movement of said trigger; and

a control system in communication with said sensor system, said electric motor and said trigger, wherein said control system is configured to limit a maximum movement of said trigger based on a signal generated by the sensor system.

2. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said end effector comprises a staple cartridge including a plurality of staples removably stored therein, and wherein said staples are ejected from said staple cartridge during said actuation stroke.

3. The surgical instrument system of claim 2 , wherein said staple cartridge is removably positioned in said first jaw.

4. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , further comprising a housing, wherein said shaft extends from said housing.

5. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , further comprising a housing configured to be attached to a robotic surgical system, wherein said shaft extends from said housing.

6. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft;

an end effector extending from said shaft, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a first jaw; and

a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw;

a firing member movable toward said distal end during a firing stroke, wherein said firing member comprises a first portion configured to engage said first jaw and a second portion configured to engage said second jaw and control a position of said second jaw relative to said first jaw during said firing stroke;

a sensor system configured to detect positions of said firing member during said firing stroke;

an electric motor configured to move said firing member through said firing stroke;

a trigger coupled to said electric motor, wherein a rotational speed of said electric motor is related to an amount of movement of said trigger; and

a control system in communication with said sensor system, said electric motor and said trigger, wherein said control system is configured to limit a maximum movement of said trigger based on a signal generated by the sensor system.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein said end effector comprises a staple cartridge including a plurality of staples removably stored therein, and wherein said staples are ejected from said staple cartridge during said firing stroke.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said staple cartridge is removably positioned in said first jaw.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , further comprising a housing, wherein said shaft extends from said housing.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , further comprising a housing configured to be attached to a robotic surgical system, wherein said shaft extends from said housing.

11. A surgical instrument system, comprising:

a shaft;

an end effector extending from said shaft, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a first jaw; and

a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw;

a firing member movable toward said distal end during a firing stroke, wherein said firing member comprises a first portion configured to engage said first jaw and a second portion configured to engage said second jaw and control a position of said second jaw relative to said first jaw during said firing stroke;

a sensor system configured to detect positions of said firing member during said firing stroke;

an electric motor configured to move said firing member through said firing stroke;

a trigger coupled to said electric motor, wherein a rotational force generated by said electric motor is related to an amount of movement of said trigger; and

a control system in communication with said sensor system, said electric motor and said trigger, wherein said control system is configured to limit a maximum movement of said trigger based on a signal generated by the sensor system.

12. The surgical instrument system of claim 11 , wherein said end effector comprises a staple cartridge including a plurality of staples removably stored therein, and wherein said staples are ejected from said staple cartridge during said firing stroke.

13. The surgical instrument system of claim 12 , wherein said staple cartridge is removably positioned in said first jaw.

14. The surgical instrument system of claim 11 , further comprising a housing, wherein said shaft extends from said housing.

15. The surgical instrument system of claim 11 , further comprising a housing configured to be attached to a robotic surgical system, wherein said shaft extends from said housing.
